The Genesis of an Electric Power Take-Off System
The electric semi-truck brand Windrose has engineered an entirely electric power take-off (PTO) unit capable of delivering a robust 70 kW of energy without consuming any diesel fuel. This development could provide their substantial battery electric vehicles (BEVs) a distinct competitive edge in the market.
Windrose's Journey and Market Impact
Antwerp-based Windrose has navigated a journey filled with both scrutiny and acclaim. Despite early skepticism labeling it anything from a “Tesla Semi imitator” to a “publicity stunt,” the R700 electric semi has consistently impressed testers. Notably, one unit successfully transported a combined load of 75,000 lbs over 578 miles between Colton, California, and Buckeye, Arizona, along the crucial I-10 freight route.
Empowering Vehicle Transport Fleets with Electric Capability
Building on its proven performance, Windrose is now extending its electric capabilities to vehicle transport fleets. These specialized carriers (as depicted below) have substantial power requirements for their operations. Wen Han, CEO of Windrose, stated, "We believed that all cars, including EVs, should be moved by electric trucks. Unable to find a suitable electric power take-off (EPTO) solution for ramp and rack power, we created our own. It's the size of an iPad, seamlessly integrated into our custom-designed e-axle, delivering 70kW from our 800V high-voltage platform with zero emissions."
Demystifying the Power Take-Off (PTO) Concept
For those unfamiliar, a power take-off (PTO) functions as a mechanical power output, channeling energy to external machinery such as a dump bed, cherry picker, or plow. In traditional diesel trucks, the PTO typically draws power from the transmission or engine, utilizing the running engine for mechanical force. However, electric trucks lack an idling combustion engine, necessitating power conversion from their battery to mechanical energy for auxiliary equipment. This generally involves incorporating an electric motor and power electronics to drive pumps or other accessories.
Addressing the Challenge of Electric PTO Integration
While companies like Mack and Volvo can integrate electric drive motors with their existing automated transmissions, trucks employing independent electric motors without a transmission, such as the Tesla Semi, face a challenge in providing compatible power for the vast ecosystem of trailers, hydraulic pumps, cherry pickers, cranes, and plows designed for conventional mechanical PTOs.
Windrose's Innovative EPTO Solution
Windrose has pioneered an alternative solution by embedding its EPTO within a compact module directly integrated into the company's proprietary e-axle. This ingenious approach has garnered considerable attention within the industry.
