Williams team principal James Vowles has revealed that absolute transparency and driver involvement are the cornerstones of how he maintains trust with his drivers, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon. This strategy is particularly crucial during the team's current rebuilding phase, where maintaining morale and confidence is paramount.
Vowles elaborated on his approach during a live recording of the Up To Speed podcast at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. He was specifically asked about his methods for handling potentially difficult conversations with his driver lineup amidst the team's development challenges. Sainz, a highly sought-after driver, ultimately committed to Williams, making the preservation of his and Albon's trust even more vital, especially as the team has faced winter development delays.
According to Vowles, a key element of maintaining these crucial working relationships is ensuring that his drivers are the first to be informed about any internal issues. This proactive communication happens long before such information is made public. Vowles recounted that when problems first surfaced around October of the previous year, he immediately contacted Sainz, followed by Albon, emphasizing that the order was merely coincidental, not indicative of priority.

Rather than concealing difficulties, Vowles believes in openly acknowledging what has gone well, what has not, and the corrective actions being implemented.
