Williams attributes Sainz-Piastri Hungarian GP clash to FIA system and team communication failures




Williams team principal James Vowles has offered a detailed explanation regarding the on-track incident involving Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri at the recent Hungarian Grand Prix. Vowles pointed to significant technical issues with the FIA's automated blue flag system, alongside a shortfall in the team's internal communication protocols, as the primary causes of the collision, absolving Sainz of direct blame.
According to Vowles, the automated blue flag system, which is designed to alert drivers when a faster car is approaching, suffered critical malfunctions. This failure necessitated marshals to resort to manual waved flags, a method prone to inconsistencies in timing and driver notification. Further complicating matters, the subsequent use of flashing blue light panels also proved inadequate, as they failed to specify which driver needed to yield, creating widespread confusion among competitors, particularly between Sainz, Piastri, and Fernando Alonso, whose delayed reaction further contributed to the chaotic sequence of events.
The Williams chief highlighted that despite the team's initial warning to Sainz about Piastri's approach into Turn 1, a crucial communication oversight occurred. He acknowledged that the team should have provided clearer instructions to Sainz when he was alongside Alonso on the approach to Turn 2, which would have helped prevent the subsequent entanglement with Piastri. This incident ultimately resulted in Sainz receiving a five-second penalty and finishing in 18th place, while Piastri was forced to retire due to a gearbox issue, underscoring the critical need for robust and precise race management systems.
