Waymo Challenges Tesla's Self-Driving Vision




In a recent publication, Waymo articulated a clear stance on the future of autonomous driving, implicitly questioning the methodology embraced by Tesla. The two industry pioneers have long pursued distinct paths in developing self-driving capabilities. Waymo's latest insights, drawn from extensive real-world autonomous mileage, underscore its conviction regarding the optimal strategy for achieving full vehicle autonomy.
Waymo's vice president of onboard software, Srikanth Thirumalai, highlighted ten critical lessons from over 200 million autonomous miles. Without directly naming competitors, the post systematically addressed concepts central to Tesla's self-driving philosophy. A key point of contention is the sensor suite: while Tesla relies exclusively on cameras, Waymo's Ojai van integrates a diverse array of sensors, including 13 cameras, 4 lidar units, and 6 radars, supplemented by microphones. Thirumalai firmly stated that a multimodal sensor approach is essential, arguing that cameras alone are insufficient for creating a robust and redundant understanding of the vehicle's surroundings. Lidar's precision in capturing 3D geometry and radar's ability to detect objects in adverse conditions, such as dense fog, are deemed indispensable, complementing cameras' utility in tasks like reading traffic signs.
Furthermore, Waymo emphasized the crucial role of high-definition maps, a component Tesla deems unnecessary. These detailed maps, according to Waymo, provide invaluable assistance in challenging visibility and complex urban environments. The company also expressed skepticism about pure end-to-end AI systems, which process raw sensor data directly into driving commands. Waymo argues that such 'black box' systems make it difficult to ascertain the rationale behind autonomous decisions, posing risks. Waymo asserts that true autonomous system maturity is achieved not through incremental improvements to driver-assist systems or extensive simulations, but through actual autonomous operation, where the system independently navigates diverse and unpredictable scenarios.
