Volvo is set to revolutionize the plug-in hybrid market with its 2028 XC60 and XC90 models, which will boast significantly extended all-electric ranges. These enhancements are designed to allow drivers to complete the majority of their daily commutes, errands, and even weekend trips on battery power alone, drastically reducing the need for gasoline. The improvements reflect advancements in battery technology and Volvo's strategic pivot to strengthen its plug-in hybrid offerings amidst a re-evaluation of its all-electric timeline.
Volvo's Electrified Future: Enhanced Range for XC60 and XC90 PHEVs
On a recent Tuesday, Volvo unveiled exciting details about its 2028 XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs). Both premium SUVs are slated to receive substantial upgrades to their all-electric driving capabilities, thanks to the integration of larger, floor-mounted battery packs. The forthcoming XC60 will achieve an impressive 78 miles of electric range on a single charge, a significant leap from its current 35 miles. This range even surpasses the original Nissan Leaf's EPA rating of 73 miles, a vehicle that was entirely electric. Similarly, the larger XC90 PHEV will see its electric range extend to 73 miles, up from the current model's 32 miles. These figures will position both the XC60 and XC90 as the longest-range PHEVs available in the United States.
This strategic move by Volvo underscores a shift in its electrification strategy. While the automaker initially pledged to phase out combustion engines entirely by 2030, a revised outlook in 2024, influenced by a slower-than-anticipated growth in EV sales, particularly in the U.S., has led Volvo to reinforce its commitment to plug-in hybrids. Hakan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Cars, emphasized that these long-range PHEVs, alongside the all-electric EX60, will create their most robust electrified lineup in the mid-size SUV segment, offering a clear path to full electrification for every customer.
For the average U.S. customer, who typically drives around 22 miles for a round trip and less than 30 miles daily, these extended ranges mean that most daily driving can be accomplished solely on electric power. This not only offers substantial fuel savings but also reduces wear and tear on the gasoline engine. The XC60 will provide a total range of 590 miles with a full tank and charge, while the XC90 will offer 560 miles, ensuring ample capability for longer journeys.
Under the hood, both models will retain their turbocharged four-cylinder engines, now paired with a 37.9 kilowatt-hour usable battery capacity, double the previous 18.8 kWh. They will continue to feature standard all-wheel drive and a combined output of 455 horsepower. Volvo has confirmed that despite the doubled battery capacity, charging times will remain efficient: under six hours on a Level 2 charger and approximately four hours with a more powerful 16-amp home charger.
The XC60, Volvo's global and U.S. best-seller, will also receive a subtle facelift, featuring a sleeker front end with a more refined grille and chiseled headlamps, along with updated Thor's hammer daytime running lights. The tailgate and taillamps will also sport a cleaner design, while the overall silhouette remains iconic.
While the market has seen other notable PHEVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e (54 miles electric range) and the Toyota RAV4 PHEV (54 miles electric range), which also offer DC fast charging capabilities, Volvo's new models are poised to set a new benchmark for electric range. The success of these enhanced PHEVs will largely depend on consumer charging habits, with recent studies showing varying results on whether PHEV owners consistently plug in. However, a Toyota-backed study indicated that North American PHEV owners are indeed utilizing the electric range as intended, suggesting a positive outlook for Volvo's latest offerings. Production for these long-range PHEVs is set to commence in the autumn, with a U.S. market launch planned for early 2027.
