Volkswagen Unveils New Tukan Pickup Truck, Not for US Market
Volkswagen has revealed its brand-new Tukan pickup in Brazil, completely without camouflage. This vehicle is intended to take over from the veteran Saveiro, which has been in production for an extended period. Making its first public debut at the Barretos Rodeo Festival in São Paulo, the Tukan will be available in both single-cab and double-cab variants, with sales commencing in early 2027. The Tukan is a larger and more contemporary offering compared to its predecessor, and it will be manufactured in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná. Its primary competitor in the market will be the Fiat Strada.
While specific details regarding dimensions, payload capacity, and full model range have not yet been disclosed, the availability of two cab styles indicates that the Tukan will cater to a broad spectrum of buyers, from those requiring a utility-focused work vehicle to families seeking a more comprehensively equipped personal pickup. Unlike its former counterpart, the Tukan will be positioned between compact and midsize pickup categories, expanding its market reach beyond traditional commercial users. Its design aligns with Volkswagen's current aesthetic direction, featuring sleek headlights integrated with a horizontal trim element and robust bumper designs that emphasize the vehicle's broad stance. The rear design incorporates 'E'-shaped taillights linked by a full-width bar across the tailgate.
Under the hood, various powertrain options are anticipated. Basic models are expected to feature the established naturally aspirated 1.6 MSI engine paired with a manual gearbox, catering to commercial fleets and small businesses looking for simplicity and cost-effectiveness. Mid-tier versions might adopt the 1.0 TSI flex-fuel engine with a six-speed automatic transmission, or possibly the newer eight-speed unit introduced in the T-Cross. For the top-tier trims, the Tukan could introduce Volkswagen's new 1.5 TSI Evo2 engine, complemented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a technology that may eventually be incorporated into other Volkswagen models produced in Brazil. The vehicle's foundation will be derived from the versatile MQB platform, already utilized by other Volkswagen models such as the Polo, Nivus, Tera, and T-Cross. However, for enhanced load-carrying capabilities and durability in commercial applications, the rear suspension will consist of a solid axle with leaf springs, a configuration common in utility vehicles and also found in the rival Fiat Strada.
The Tukan's introduction signifies the retirement of the Saveiro, a model that has been a fixture in Volkswagen’s Brazilian lineup since 1982. The new pickup is poised to become an accessible and dependable workhorse, built on a proven platform. This approach suggests a focus on reliability and longevity, leveraging the MQB platform's extensive track record of over 14 years. Volkswagen's strategic goal is to capture a larger share of the segment currently led by the Fiat Strada, which has dominated the Brazilian market since 2021. The Tukan is designed to emulate the Strada's successful formula by offering a diverse range of options, including advanced engines, automatic transmissions, and hybrid technology in its higher specifications. The official pricing and detailed equipment lists will be revealed closer to its launch in early 2027.
