Volkswagen Recalls ID.4 EVs Amid Battery Fire Risk, Advises Limited Charging

Safety First: Volkswagen's Proactive Steps for ID.4 Battery Concerns
New Recall Impacts Thousands of Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicles
Volkswagen has recently issued a recall affecting over 22,500 units of its ID.4 electric vehicle lineup. This measure is a response to emerging concerns regarding the potential for battery-related issues in these models. This follows a prior recall earlier in the year that encompassed nearly 100,000 electric vehicles globally, including a substantial number of ID.4s in the United States.
The Underlying Issue: Thermal Propagation Risk in High-Voltage Batteries
In a formal communication to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) dated October 6, Volkswagen detailed the scope of the recall, which targets 22,524 ID.4 SUVs from model years 2023 to 2026. The company indicated that charging the high-voltage battery beyond 80% capacity in certain vehicles within this affected range could potentially lead to 'thermal propagation,' a condition signifying an internal fire risk within the battery system, although the precise cause remains under investigation.
Temporary Precaution: Limiting Battery Charging to 80%
Until a definitive solution is developed and made available, Volkswagen is strongly recommending that all owners of the affected vehicles limit their battery charging to no more than 80% of its total capacity. This interim guideline is based on ongoing field studies and reviews of Volkswagen vehicles not previously included in earlier battery recall campaigns, aiming to mitigate any immediate risks.
Collaboration and Investigation: Seeking Clarification from Battery Suppliers
The Volkswagen Group Product Safety Committee is actively engaged in discussions with SK Battery America, the battery cell supplier, to obtain further clarity regarding the manufacturing processes and to establish a timeline for implementing a permanent fix. In the U.S., Volkswagen has recorded 22 claims related to these battery concerns between January 18, 2024, and August 7, 2026.
Communication and Resolution: Next Steps for Affected Owners
Volkswagen plans to dispatch official letters to inform owners of the safety risks by November 27, 2026. Additional notifications will follow once a repair solution becomes available. Owners who have questions or require further assistance can reach out to Volkswagen's customer service or consult the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline for more details, referencing Volkswagen's recall number 93EX or NHTSA campaign number 26V630.
