Volkswagen ID. Polo Crowned German Car of the Year 2027

The Volkswagen ID. Polo, an economical electric vehicle, has been honored as the German Car of the Year for 2027. This achievement underscores the growing influence of electric vehicles in the automotive sector, with Volkswagen's model winning its category before securing the overall title. The vehicle's affordability and performance have resonated with both consumers and industry experts, marking a significant milestone for the brand and the broader EV market.

Volkswagen's ID. Polo, priced from just €24,995, recently clinched the prestigious 'German Car of the Year 2027' award. This compact electric vehicle first emerged victorious in its segment, which includes entry-level cars up to €25,000, before outperforming a diverse range of international contenders to claim the ultimate accolade across all vehicle categories. This marks a consecutive win for the Volkswagen Group in the compact EV sector, following the Skoda Elroq's success last year.

Orders for the ID. Polo commenced in late April, initially offering a 52 kWh battery option. By July, Volkswagen introduced a more accessible version with a 37 kWh battery, boasting a starting price of €24,995 ($28,000) and a WLTP estimated range of up to 207 miles (334 km). Additional variants, 'Life' and 'Style,' equipped with the 37 kWh battery, are available from €29,195 ($32,500). The vehicle supports DC fast charging up to 90 kW, enabling a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 23 minutes.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, emphasized that the award validates the ID. Polo's mission to bring electric mobility into everyday life. He revealed that over 50,000 orders have been placed since its launch in late April. The ID. Polo is recognized as the first model to bear an established name and incorporate the brand's new 'Pure Positive' design philosophy. A panel of nearly 50 German and international automotive journalists, who consider this award among the most distinguished in the industry, made the selection.

Electric vehicles dominated other categories as well. The Kia PV5 van secured the compact class award (for vehicles between €25,000 and €40,000), while the Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric topped the premium segment (for vehicles ranging from €40,000 to €70,000). Hyundai's IONIQ 6 N, an electric sports car, was named 'German Performance Car 2027.' Martin Sander, the Group's sales boss, noted a significant acceleration in the trend towards all-electric vehicles in the German market. The VW Group's Electric Urban Car Family, which includes the VW ID. Polo, ID. Cross, Cupra Raval, and Skoda Epiq, all built on the MEB+ platform, has garnered nearly 150,000 orders since production began in June. Although the entry-level ID. Polo won't be available in the US, Volkswagen plans to launch the ID. Tiguan there in early 2027 as a successor to the ID.4.

The success of the ID. Polo at the German Car of the Year awards signifies a pivotal moment for Volkswagen and the broader electric vehicle market. Its blend of affordability, advanced features, and a compelling design has not only garnered critical acclaim but also strong consumer interest, reinforcing the shift towards sustainable transportation solutions.

BYD's 3,000-hp Electric Supercar Survives High-Speed Crash, Driver Unharmed

In an extraordinary display of both engineering prowess and driver safety, BYD's formidable Yangwang U9 Xtreme, an electric supercar boasting close to 3,000 horsepower, was recently involved in a high-speed incident while undergoing rigorous testing. During an attempt to push its limits beyond 280 mph, the vehicle sustained considerable damage, yet its driver remarkably walked away unscathed, underscoring the advanced safety mechanisms integrated into this cutting-edge machine. This event, captured on video and shared by BYD, vividly illustrates the inherent risks of automotive innovation at extreme velocities and the paramount importance placed on occupant protection in such high-performance vehicles.

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme is not just another electric vehicle; it's a meticulously crafted "dream car," as BYD proudly labels it. This track-focused variant of their electric hypercar represents the pinnacle of electric propulsion technology. Following its previous achievement of becoming the world's fastest production car, hitting an astounding speed of 308 mph, BYD engineers are now setting their sights even higher, aiming to breach the formidable 310 mph mark. The U9 Xtreme is built upon the world's inaugural mass-produced 1,200V ultra-high-voltage platform and incorporates BYD's innovative e4 platform. Its quad-motor configuration, a global first, operates at an astonishing 30,000 rpm, collectively generating nearly 3,000 PS of power.

The incident occurred as BYD was nearing another record-breaking attempt. The company released footage of the high-speed crash, which took place during a series of test runs. The vehicle successfully completed initial runs, reaching speeds of over 217 mph and then 261 mph without issue. However, during the third attempt, as the U9 Xtreme accelerated past 280 mph, it veered off course, violently colliding with a guardrail before spinning uncontrollably. The dramatic internal camera footage offered a chilling perspective of the moment of impact. Despite the severity of the crash, a thorough medical examination confirmed that the driver sustained no serious injuries, a testament to the vehicle's structural integrity and safety engineering, particularly its high-strength carbon-fiber cabin, which withstood the immense forces of the collision.

Undeterred by the setback, BYD swiftly resumed testing, achieving a top speed of 284.5 mph in a subsequent run. Jiang Gong, one of Yangwang's expert drivers, expressed confidence that the vehicle still possesses the potential to surpass the 310 mph barrier. This relentless pursuit of peak performance is encapsulated in BYD's closing statement in the shared video: "The ultimate pursuit has no end; the summit will eventually be reached." This incident, while a minor detour, reaffirms BYD's commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle performance and safety, showcasing both the incredible power and the robust protective measures embedded in their flagship supercar.
