Volkswagen Hints at Next-Gen Amarok, Possible SUV Variant on the Horizon






Volkswagen recently offered a glimpse into the future of its Amarok pickup, a model poised for a significant evolution. Slated for a 2027 debut, this next-generation truck is set to be the most powerful in its lineage, featuring an electrified powertrain. Furthermore, there's a strong indication of an SUV version in the pipeline, which would offer three rows of seating, marking a strategic expansion for the Amarok nameplate.
Volkswagen's Strategic Unveiling and Performance Promises
In a significant announcement at Brazil's prestigious Festa do Peão de Barretos rodeo festival, Volkswagen officially presented a camouflaged prototype of the upcoming Amarok. This event served as a crucial platform to engage a key demographic for pickup sales, including farmers and agribusiness professionals. While specific technical details remain under wraps, the automaker confirmed that the new Amarok would boast unprecedented power and an electrified architecture, aligning with previous reports of a plug-in hybrid variant, the Amarok 800 TSI, expected to deliver over 464 horsepower and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. This performance target would position the new Amarok as a formidable contender against rivals like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.
The current Amarok, known for its 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel, already offers robust performance with 254 hp and 427 lb-ft of torque. However, the electrified successor is projected to significantly surpass these figures, potentially achieving 0–62 mph (0-100 km/h) in under five seconds. Alexander Seitz, executive chairman of VW South America, even drew parallels to the acceleration of a Porsche Panamera, underscoring the ambitious performance goals for the new pickup.
The foundation for this new Amarok will be an architecture shared with the Maxus Interstellar X, a Chinese-developed pickup from SAIC. This collaboration, building on a long-standing partnership between VW and SAIC in the Chinese market, enables Volkswagen to streamline development and reduce costs. While sharing a platform, VW's South American design and engineering teams are actively involved in customizing the Amarok to meet regional demands, focusing on distinct suspension, steering, driving dynamics, and electronic system calibration to maintain the brand's unique driving character. The new model is expected to be larger than its predecessor, providing enhanced cabin space and a more accommodating rear seating arrangement, drawing insights from the Interstellar X's dimensions of approximately 216.5 inches long and a 129.9-inch wheelbase.
Extensive real-world testing is underway across various South American environments, including urban areas, highways, and challenging rural terrains. These trials, conducted under diverse conditions, are crucial for fine-tuning the vehicle's performance, cooling, sealing, and electronic systems to ensure it meets the rigorous demands of the Brazilian and Argentine markets. The production of the new Amarok will continue at Volkswagen's General Pacheco plant in Argentina, following a substantial investment of 4 billion reais into the facility's modernization to accommodate electrified vehicle assembly. This plant has been a cornerstone of Amarok production since 2010, having manufactured 800,000 units, with over 465,000 exported globally.
The official launch for the new Amarok is confirmed for 2027, with further details regarding versions, equipment, and powertrain specifications to be unveiled progressively. The current V6 turbodiesel Amarok will remain available until the new generation's full rollout, bridging the gap towards an increasingly electrified future for the pickup segment. Furthermore, the prospect of an Amarok-based SUV, internally known as the “Atacama Project,” with three rows and seven seats, presents an exciting future expansion, potentially leveraging the hybrid powertrain of the new Amarok.
