Volkswagen Expands ID. Buzz Cargo: Longer Wheelbase and Enhanced Capabilities
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled a significant upgrade to its all-electric ID. Buzz Cargo, introducing a long-wheelbase variant designed to enhance its utility and carrying capacity. This expansion directly addresses the demands of commercial users, offering greater space, improved accessibility, and a suite of technological advancements to streamline daily operations.
The core enhancement of the new ID. Buzz Cargo is its extended wheelbase, which has been stretched by 250 millimeters (approximately 9.8 inches). This modification translates directly into a more capacious cargo area, increasing the total volume by 0.5 cubic meters (17.7 cubic feet) to an impressive 4.4 cubic meters (155.4 cubic feet). The load floor now measures 2,458 mm (96.8 inches) in length, while maintaining a consistent width of 1,230 mm (48.4 inches) between the wheel housings, ensuring ample room for various goods and equipment.
Beyond simply adding length, Volkswagen has also refined the van's practicality. A second sliding door is now a standard feature on the long-wheelbase model, providing greater flexibility for loading and unloading. This door has also been widened by 190 mm (7.5 inches), a critical improvement that now allows for the convenient loading of Euro pallets through the side. Such details are particularly valuable for commercial operators, where efficiency and ease of access are paramount.
Under the hood, or rather, beneath the floor, the ID. Buzz Cargo LWB is equipped with a larger 86 kWh battery, an upgrade from the standard-wheelbase version's 79 kWh. This larger battery powers either a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive configuration delivering 286 horsepower, or a dual-motor, 4Motion all-wheel-drive setup boasting 340 horsepower. The vehicle's towing capabilities are also robust, with a rated capacity of up to 1,800 kg (3,968 lb) for a braked trailer, irrespective of the drivetrain choice.
Payload capacity varies depending on the drive system; the rear-wheel-drive model can handle up to 700 kg (1,543 lb), while the all-wheel-drive version supports 606 kg (1,336 lb). For enhanced driver comfort, manually adjustable lumbar support has been added to the options list, recognizing the importance of ergonomic support for those spending long hours on the road. The interior also sees a welcome return to physical buttons on the steering wheel, a move applauded by many who prefer tactile controls over touch-sensitive alternatives.
Technological advancements extend to safety and convenience. The ID. Buzz Cargo LWB features an enhanced driver-assistance system capable of recognizing traffic lights and automatically bringing the van to a halt when approaching a red light. The introduction of one-pedal driving further improves the electric van's urban driving experience. Additionally, the vehicle includes Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, transforming it into a mobile power source with a continuous output of 3 kW and a peak of 3.6 kW, ideal for powering external equipment on job sites.
The long-wheelbase ID. Buzz Cargo is currently available for purchase in Germany, with the 4Motion model starting at €50,630 net. The rear-wheel-drive version will soon follow at a slightly reduced price of €48,490 net, reflecting a premium of €2,340 over the standard-wheelbase Cargo. These updates position the ID. Buzz Cargo LWB as a more capable and user-friendly electric work vehicle.
