The US's First Residential Vehicle-to-Grid Power System Powered by Ford F-150 Lightning Trucks

Pioneering Energy: Ford F-150 Lightnings Power the Nation's First Residential V2G System
Innovative Collaboration: Sunrun and BGE Launching the Groundbreaking V2G Initiative
A pioneering effort in the US sees solar and energy storage provider Sunrun, in conjunction with Maryland utility BGE, unveil the nation's inaugural residential vehicle-to-grid (V2G) distributed power system. This innovative setup is distinguished by its reliance on Ford F-150 Lightning trucks as its primary energy source, signaling a new era for integrating electric vehicles into mainstream power solutions.
Empowering Consumers: The Pilot Program's Mechanics and Benefits
Operational from July through September, the pilot program allows participants to channel surplus energy from their Ford F-150 Lightning batteries back into the electrical grid during periods of high demand in the evenings. Three Maryland residents are actively engaged in this trial, utilizing a specialized Home Integration System developed by Ford and Sunrun to seamlessly link their vehicles. Sunrun oversees the program's execution, providing incentives of up to $1,000 to drivers over the season, contingent on their energy contributions.
Strategic Vision: Enhancing Grid Stability and Economic Opportunities
Mary Powell, CEO of Sunrun, underscored the pivotal role vehicle batteries can play in bolstering the nation's power infrastructure, highlighting the project's dual benefits of improving grid reliability and generating income for electric vehicle owners. Similarly, Bill Crider, Senior Director of Global Charging and Energy Services at Ford, emphasized the mutual advantages for consumers, utilities, and society, particularly the ability of electric vehicles to both power homes and supply electricity to the grid when it's most needed.
Real-World Impact: Participant Experience and Future Outlook
Morgan Grove, a Baltimore resident and pilot participant, shared his motivation for acquiring a Ford Lightning, which included its home backup power capabilities. He noted the added advantage of being able to monetize his vehicle's energy by feeding it back into the grid. Sunrun serves as Ford's preferred installer for its Home Backup Power system, which encompasses the Ford Charge Station Pro and the Home Integration System, representing the first commercially available bidirectional charging solution in the United States.
