Unused Technology: The Overlooked Passenger Screens in Modern Vehicles




Contemporary automotive design has seen an exponential rise in the incorporation of digital displays, transforming vehicle interiors into veritable command centers. This evolution includes the widespread adoption of large infotainment screens and, more recently, dedicated passenger displays. However, a recent comprehensive study by JD Power’s 2026 U.S. Tech Experience Index has cast doubt on the utility of these passenger-side screens, indicating that a substantial percentage of vehicle owners rarely, if ever, engage with them.
According to the study, a remarkable 35% of new car owners equipped with a passenger screen have never once activated it. Furthermore, only a mere 6% of respondents reported consistent use of the screen during every drive. This data suggests a potential overestimation by manufacturers regarding consumer demand for such features. Interestingly, these passenger infotainment systems also emerged as a primary source of customer dissatisfaction, contributing to 21.3 problems per 100 vehicles in a related quality study. In contrast, simpler, more integrated technologies like smart ignition systems and intuitive climate controls received higher satisfaction ratings and fewer complaints.
The findings illuminate a critical insight: while advanced digital interfaces may enhance a car's perceived modernity and visual appeal, drivers ultimately value functionality, reliability, and seamless integration over extraneous, complex additions. The preference for 'under-the-radar' technology that simply works, rather than flashy features that add unnecessary complexity or remain unused, signals a need for automakers to align their technological innovations more closely with actual driver and passenger needs and behaviors. This disparity points towards an ongoing challenge in balancing innovation with practicality in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.
