U-Haul Debuts Massive Peterbilt 'Easy Mover' Truck for Enhanced Relocation Experience
U-Haul has rolled out its latest innovation in the moving industry, a colossal Peterbilt box truck dubbed the "Easy Mover." This new vehicle, nearly 44 feet long with an expansive 29-foot cargo bay, aims to redefine the self-moving experience by offering enhanced ease of use, comfort, and capacity. Designed to tackle even the largest relocations, the EM model is a significant upgrade from the company's existing fleet, promising a more modern and driver-friendly journey for customers.
For years, U-Haul's larger rental options have relied on older platforms, providing functionality but often falling short on contemporary driving features. The "Easy Mover" addresses these shortcomings by integrating a modern cab and chassis, marking U-Haul's first collaboration with Peterbilt. This partnership ushers in a new era of rental trucks that prioritize driver comfort and maneuverability, even with its impressive dimensions. The truck is specifically engineered to be easier to steer and to facilitate entry and exit, making the daunting task of moving a large household less strenuous.
Under the hood, the "Easy Mover" is equipped with a powerful 300-horsepower Cummins turbocharged inline-six gas engine, delivering a robust 660 pound-feet of torque. This engine, a first of its kind for Cummins, runs on regular unleaded fuel, aligning with U-Haul's standard vehicle requirements. Despite its formidable power, the truck achieves an estimated 8 miles per gallon, and its 60-gallon fuel tank allows for extended travel between refueling stops. Crucially, the truck's design ensures that it can be operated without the need for a commercial driver's license (CDL), thanks to its 25,999-pound Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR).
The EM model boasts a substantial towing capacity of up to 10,000 pounds and a payload rating of 11,939 pounds, making it ideal for large-scale moves. U-Haul states that this truck can accommodate the entire contents of a four- to six-bedroom home, surpassing the capacity of its previous largest model, the 26-foot JH box truck, which held the title since 1988. Additionally, the "Easy Mover" features a lower loading height compared to its predecessors, and its air-spring suspension can further drop the cargo bay by four inches to a convenient 30 inches for effortless loading and unloading.
A familiar feature, the U-Haul signature "Mom's Attic" over the cab, provides extra storage for smaller, more delicate items. Renters are advised to secure these items with straps to prevent shifting during acceleration, as the truck's power might indeed rearrange unsecured loads. Starting at $49.95 per day for local moves, the EM offers a premium moving experience at the same price point as the smaller 26-foot truck. Given the enhanced comfort and drivability, many movers may find the trade-off of potentially higher fuel costs worthwhile for the improved journey during peak moving seasons.
