Tsunoda's Unexpected F1 Comeback After Beach Vacation Call

Yuki Tsunoda's Formula 1 comeback for the Dutch Grand Prix was a last-minute affair, initiated by an unexpected phone call during his serene beach vacation in Greece. Despite being on holiday, the athlete maintained his rigorous training regimen, proving his readiness for the sport's demanding nature. This unforeseen opportunity arose due to a wrist injury sustained by Isack Hadjar, leading to a reshuffle in the driver lineup.
Tsunoda's Swift Transition from Serenity to the F1 Grid
On August 20, 2026, Yuki Tsunoda, relaxing on a picturesque beach in Greece, received a life-altering phone call. His manager informed him of an immediate need to report to the UK, hinting at a potential return to Formula 1 for the Dutch Grand Prix. This call came as a complete surprise, as Tsunoda had been enjoying his summer break, having lost his race seat after the 2026 season and serving as Red Bull Racing's official reserve driver. The turn of events saw Liam Lawson, with more experience in the new generation F1 cars, being called up to Red Bull's senior team, consequently opening a slot for Tsunoda at Racing Bulls, his former team from 2021 to 2025.
Upon arriving at the Zandvoort paddock, Tsunoda shared his astonishment, stating, "I was with my manager and also other friends in Greece, spending [time] together. I was on the beach. I wasn’t just hanging on the beach all the time [during the holiday] and I was still training and everything. But at the moment I received a call from my managers at the beach, [I was] pretty relaxed and watching the nice, beautiful ocean." He further elaborated on the abruptness of the situation: "I just suddenly got a call, ‘OK, you have to go to the UK.’ OK, I was in Greece [for] just 24 hours and you already want me to go to the UK? I said, ‘Why?’ - ‘Maybe you might race this week.’ OK, that's where I'm going [then]!"

Despite the sudden nature of his recall, Tsunoda felt confident in his physical and mental preparedness. He highlighted his consistent training regime throughout his break and extensive simulator work, including four TPCs (Testing Promotional Cars) with five race distances each. His main challenge, he admitted, would be adapting to the Racing Bulls car, which he hadn't driven in a live session since the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He only had his first simulator session with Racing Bulls the day before his Grand Prix return, on Wednesday.
As of now, the duration of Tsunoda's unexpected return remains uncertain, pending Hadjar's recovery. Nevertheless, Tsunoda is approaching this opportunity with enthusiasm, eager to embrace the experience he has long awaited.
