Vintage Volkswagen Enthusiasts Invade Santa Cruz Wharf for Vibrant Car Show

The Santa Cruz Wharf was transformed into a vintage Volkswagen wonderland as over 200 classic "V-Dubs" descended upon the scenic coastal destination for the second annual "Wharf Invasion" car show. Organized by the nonprofit VDUBlicious, the event brought together the Nor-Cal Volkswagen community to celebrate their shared passion for these iconic German automobiles.

Unleashing the Unique Charm of Vintage Volkswagens

A Gathering of Volkswagen Enthusiasts

The "Wharf Invasion" car show was a testament to the enduring appeal of vintage Volkswagens. From classic Beetles to iconic buses and beyond, the diverse array of vehicles on display showcased the rich history and individuality of these beloved automobiles. The event organizers, Chris Kremer and O.J. Macias of VDUBlicious, were thrilled to see the Volkswagen community come together to share their stories and admire each other's prized possessions.

Celebrating the Volkswagen Personality

Kremer, a lifelong Volkswagen enthusiast who owns seven vintage models, highlighted the unique character of these vehicles. "With Volkswagens, community is what it's all about. Everybody has a story about their Volkswagen, so it's cool to see everyone come out and to hear their stories," he said. Whether stock, custom, or lowered, each Volkswagen seemed to have its own distinct personality, captivating the hearts of the attendees.

Rare and Remarkable Volkswagens on Display

The "Wharf Invasion" showcased an impressive array of Volkswagen rarities, including Kremer's own 15-window VW bus, which had been rescued from a Colorado field after sitting for 25 years. Another standout was Castro Valley resident Kurt Burton's 1968 Volkswagen Double Cab Pick-up, one of fewer than 5,000 ever produced. Despite its pristine appearance, the vehicle had been well-traveled, with Burton driving it as far as Chico, Clovis, and even San Clemente.

The Volkswagen Community Spirit

The event not only celebrated the unique charm of vintage Volkswagens but also the tight-knit community that surrounds them. Macias, the VDUBlicious Vice President, expressed the group's gratitude for the community's support, saying, "We're all like family." This sentiment was echoed by local Volkswagen owner and artist Arturo Mendez, who noted that the Volkswagen community is always willing to lend a helping hand when needed.

Volkswagens as a Generational Touchstone

The appeal of vintage Volkswagens transcends generations, as evidenced by the diverse crowd at the "Wharf Invasion." Santa Cruz resident Bob Ferraro, who has owned four different Volkswagen models, shared his perspective: "In the '70s, there was the oil shortage, so big cars weren't very appealing, and Volkswagens are easier to work on. It's a commonality of a generation."

Expanding the Vintage Volkswagen Invasion

With the success of the second "Wharf Invasion," the organizers of VDUBlicious are already looking to the future. Macias revealed plans to take over Capitola Village for a show this spring, promising another great event for the Volkswagen community to come together and celebrate their shared passion.
