Tesla Model Y Premium Gains 2.4 kW Vehicle-to-Load Capability with New Adapter




Tesla has introduced a new vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability for its Model Y Premium variant in the United States and Puerto Rico. This feature, which enables the vehicle to supply 2.4 kW of power from its battery at 120 volts and 20 amps, is accessible through a specific adapter. This development marks a significant enhancement for Model Y owners, allowing their electric vehicles to function as a portable power source for various electrical devices.
To utilize this V2L function, Model Y Premium owners need to acquire an $80 accessory. This adapter is designed to integrate with the Gen 3 Mobile Connector, which is the standard charging cable provided with new Model Y vehicles and is also available for separate purchase. The process involves connecting the Mobile Connector's handle to the car's charge port and then attaching the V2L adapter to the other end, providing standard household outlets. This setup is capable of supporting devices requiring up to 20 amps of current. Notably, this same accessory was previously introduced for Cybertruck owners in April 2025, offering identical power output. Currently, the Tesla Shop lists the Model Y Premium, Model Y Performance, and Cybertruck as compatible vehicles, excluding the more affordable Model Y Standard and the entire Model 3 lineup from this particular feature.
While this addition is a welcome one for Tesla enthusiasts, the 2.4 kW power output places Tesla's V2L offering at the lower end compared to some competitors. For instance, Hyundai's Ioniq 5, since 2021, has provided 3.6 kW V2L with both an interior outlet and a charge-port adapter included. Similarly, Kia's EV6 and EV9 offer comparable capabilities. Ford's F-150 Lightning provides V2L ranging from 2.4 kW to 9.6 kW for extended-range versions, featuring integrated outlets in the truck bed and frunk, while Chevy's Silverado EV boasts up to 10.2 kW. Tesla's approach, which involves a paid adapter and lower power output, allows for operating items like a space heater, refrigerator, job site saw, or a basic camp setup, but it still falls short of more robust bidirectional charging solutions. The company's Powershare page explicitly states that home backup functionality is not available for the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y, reserving higher-capacity home power integration for the Cybertruck, which can deliver 11.5 kW to a home.
Despite these limitations, the introduction of V2L to the Model Y Premium is a positive step. Offering an $80 adapter that transforms the vehicle into a 2.4 kW generator presents a more cost-effective alternative to many portable power stations available on the market. Extending this feature beyond just premium trims to Tesla's high-volume Model Y is a strategic move, making the technology accessible to a wider audience. However, the fact that Tesla is still catching up to features that competitors like Hyundai introduced years ago, and charges extra for the adapter while offering less power, raises questions, especially for a company deeply involved in home battery solutions, wall connectors, and grid services. The argument that V2L might cannibalize Powerwall sales is also considered to be unsubstantiated by many industry observers, suggesting that Tesla's conservative rollout of advanced bidirectional charging may be driven by other factors.
