Stolen Corvette C7 Grand Sport Found Submerged After Five Years

A Chevrolet Corvette C7 Grand Sport, reported stolen in December 2020, has been remarkably discovered at the bottom of a river in Georgia, nearly half a decade after its disappearance. This unexpected recovery was made possible by diver Jeremy Sides, who initially documented his find on Instagram, sparking a digital investigation that quickly identified the submerged vehicle.
The tale of the recovered sports car began when Jeremy Sides, associated with the Rapid Compassion Collective—an organization dedicated to locating missing individuals and clearing underwater obstructions—stumbled upon the Corvette during a routine dive. Unaware of the vehicle's history, Sides posted his discovery to his Instagram account, 'exploringwithnug'. It was through the power of social media that the car's past came to light. Viewers of Sides' post noticed an old Instagram handle still affixed to the car's windshield. This crucial detail allowed for swift identification, matching the vehicle to a theft report filed on December 11, 2020, confirming its status as a stolen car within hours of the post going viral.
The C7 Grand Sport model, known for its powerful LT1 V8 engine producing 460 horsepower, advanced braking system, and distinctive wide bodywork, was found in a state that surprised many, despite its prolonged submersion. The car's wrap was largely preserved, and its body panels showed no obvious signs of significant external damage, maintaining the unmistakable silhouette of a C7 Corvette. However, the internal components, including the infotainment system, Performance Data Recorder, and drive-mode electronics, are almost certainly damaged beyond repair due to years of water exposure. The powerful 6.2-liter pushrod V8 engine is also highly susceptible to internal corrosion, raising questions about any potential salvage or teardown assessments.
Despite the successful recovery of the vehicle, two significant questions remain unanswered. Authorities have yet to identify or apprehend anyone in connection with the original theft. Furthermore, the circumstances under which the Grand Sport ended up in the Georgia river are still unknown. It is unclear whether the car was hastily disposed of or deliberately placed there in a more calculated effort to conceal it. These unresolved aspects highlight the ongoing mystery surrounding the stolen sports car's watery fate.
