Smart #2 Details Emerge from Regulatory Filings, Unavailable in the US Market







A recently published regulatory document from the Chinese government has shed light on the specifications of the Smart #2, poised to succeed the well-known Smart ForTwo. This latest iteration continues the brand's evolution, albeit with an increasing footprint compared to its predecessors. While a comprehensive unveiling is slated for October, and global distribution is planned, the vehicle's entry into the American market faces significant hurdles.
Smart #2: Revealed Specifications and Market Implications
The original Smart ForTwo gained international recognition for its compact dimensions, famously measuring just 2,500mm in length, a characteristic that afforded it unique parking advantages in congested urban environments. Subsequent generations saw a gradual increase in size, with the most recent model reaching 2,695mm. The Smart electric drive variant, introduced in the early 2010s, highlighted the brand's foray into electric mobility, though its capabilities were modest compared to contemporary EVs.
A new chapter for Smart has begun through a collaborative venture between Mercedes and Geely, culminating in the introduction of the Smart #2. The vehicle, simply badged as "#2," will be available in two body lengths: 2,751mm and 2,764mm, both exceeding its predecessor's dimensions. Despite its growth, it remains a relatively small vehicle, with a curb weight of 1,130kg. It also boasts a more potent 60kW (80hp) electric motor, enabling a top speed of 140 km/h, powered by an LFP battery supplied by CATL. The regulatory submission also provided insights into various aesthetic options, including roof colors and wheel designs.
This swift transition from concept to near-production underscores the impressive agility of the Chinese automotive industry. However, this very dynamism has prompted protectionist measures in the United States. Concerns within the U.S. government and auto industry regarding the competitiveness of Chinese EVs have led to substantial tariffs and software-related restrictions, effectively barring these vehicles from the American market.
