Sam's Club Online Platform Boosts Niche Brands to National Prominence

Sam's Club is pioneering a new approach to retail by empowering niche, locally-sourced brands to achieve national distribution through its robust online platform. Moving beyond its traditional role as a bulk goods provider, the company is curating a selection of unique products and leveraging its digital infrastructure to connect these smaller businesses with a vast customer base across the United States. This strategic shift not only enriches Sam's Club's product assortment but also offers an unprecedented opportunity for local enterprises to scale their operations and reach new markets.
Greg Pulsifer, head of e-commerce at Sam's Club, articulated the vision behind this initiative, emphasizing a curated shopping experience rather than an all-encompassing one. He stated that the goal is to establish Sam's Club as a trusted destination for distinctive products, encouraging repeat engagement from members. With its enhanced delivery and fulfillment capabilities, the company is seamlessly integrating local discovery with national accessibility. This strategy marks a significant evolution in how wholesale clubs can support and integrate smaller, specialized brands into a larger retail ecosystem.
A prime example of this successful integration is Onyx Coffee's Doyenne brand. Co-founder Andrea Allen shared how Sam's Club provided a vital channel for Doyenne, a brand dedicated to women-led coffee producers, to significantly increase its volume without compromising its commitment to quality. Unlike most commercial-grade coffees found at Sam's Club, Doyenne sources only beans rated as excellent or outstanding by the Specialty Coffee Association. A pilot program in three Arkansas warehouses quickly demonstrated Doyenne's appeal to a diverse demographic, including customers who might not typically frequent specialty coffee shops.
The success of the initial test propelled Doyenne's expansion into over 50 Sam's Club locations nationwide and its launch on samsclub.com. This online availability dramatically accelerated growth, with Doyenne's sales nearly doubling within the first month of its e-commerce debut. Notably, almost a quarter of online orders were shipped to areas where the product was not physically stocked, highlighting the power of digital reach. Furthermore, Doyenne customers showed a higher repurchase rate compared to typical whole bean buyers at Sam's Club. By the end of July this year, Sam's Club had sold nearly 15 tons of Doyenne beans, underscoring the brand's rapid ascent.
This growth trajectory mirrors the experience of Kize nutrition bars from Oklahoma City, which gained national exposure after a Sam's Club buyer discovered them at a local expo. Other emerging brands are now following suit, benefiting from this innovative model. Pulsifer observed that in the digital age, geographical barriers that once constrained premier brands are now obsolete. The trust that Sam's Club has fostered with its members over the years translates into consumer confidence in trying new premium products online. This approach enables innovative brands to expand their footprint while preserving their unique identity and mission, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between large retailers and niche producers.
