Russell and Antonelli Dominate FP2 in Baku with Mercedes 1-2 Finish

Mercedes Ascends: A Masterclass in Baku's Streets
Mercedes' Commanding Performance in Baku
George Russell steered his Mercedes to the top of the leaderboard during Thursday's practice at the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with his teammate Kimi Antonelli closely following to secure a formidable one-two for the team. This strong showing indicates Mercedes' significant pace advantage on the high-speed 6-kilometer street circuit along the Caspian Sea.
Early Incidents and Red Flag Disruptions
The session experienced an early interruption with a red flag after just ten minutes due to a crash involving Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad. Lindblad made contact with the wall at the notorious Turn 9, located within the narrow castle section of the UNESCO heritage site. Following debris clearance, the session resumed, only to see Oliver Bearman's Haas suffer a power unit failure shortly after rejoining, limiting his run time.
The Battle for Top Times
Initially, drivers struggled to surpass Max Verstappen's early benchmark set on medium tires. However, as teams transitioned to soft-tire qualifying simulations, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc broke through with a 1m44.473s lap. Russell then decisively took command, posting a blistering 1m43.759s, a full seven-tenths quicker than Leclerc.
Mercedes Extends its Advantage
Mercedes continued to demonstrate its formidable potential on the power-demanding Baku circuit. Russell further improved his time to an impressive 1m43.347s. Antonelli, despite missing a significant portion of the first practice due to a mechanical issue, seamlessly integrated to secure second place, five-tenths behind Russell, completing Mercedes' dominant one-two finish.
The Rest of the Field: Challengers and Setbacks
Verstappen managed to climb to third, albeit more than eight-tenths adrift of Russell. Lewis Hamilton finished fifth, two-tenths behind Leclerc, followed by McLaren's Lando Norris. McLaren, having introduced a substantial upgrade package aimed at enhancing low-speed performance, was still in the process of optimizing its updated car, as Norris's time was 1.5 seconds off the pace without a representative qualifying simulation. Pierre Gasly placed seventh, ahead of Oscar Piastri, with Isack Hadjar and Esteban Ocon completing the top ten. Meanwhile, Aston Martin faced issues as Fernando Alonso's session was cut short after only nine laps due to a suspected oil leak.
