Rivian Launches Early Access Program for Hands-Free Driving Technology

Rivian has initiated an exclusive program, the "Autonomy Early Access Program," offering a select group of vehicle owners the opportunity to experience and test its innovative hands-free driving technology. This program marks a significant step towards realizing Rivian's vision for autonomous driving, with the initial focus on point-to-point hands-free navigation. The technology is slated for a confined release in late 2026, with a more extensive rollout anticipated in subsequent years.
Participation in this avant-garde program is by invitation only and comes with a stringent set of prerequisites. Prospective participants must possess an active Autonomy+ subscription, which entails either a monthly fee or a one-time payment for perpetual access. Furthermore, only owners of the latest generation R1S and R1T models are eligible, as these vehicles are equipped with the necessary advanced hardware, including a sophisticated array of ten high-definition cameras and five radar sensors capable of detecting objects up to 1,000 feet away. Older models, or "Gen 1" vehicles, lack this essential hardware and are therefore excluded. The program prioritizes owners with a commendable safety history, evidenced by minimal forward collision warnings and other safety metrics, and seeks to maintain a geographical balance among participants.
Those accepted into the program are expected to actively engage with the pre-release features on a weekly basis, meticulously documenting any encountered issues. Consistent data collection, encompassing location and camera data sharing, is mandatory. Additionally, participants are required to complete monthly surveys and may be asked to partake in one-on-one interviews or focus groups, underscoring the commitment and effort expected from them. Rivian reserves the right to review memberships every 30 days and can revoke access to pre-release features at any time. The initial phase of the program is onboarding owners in California and Florida, with plans to expand to other regions, though accepted participants can utilize the features across all supported roads in the United States.
The first key feature under evaluation within the early access initiative is point-to-point hands-free driving, which is projected for a limited introduction in late 2026, followed by a broader release to second-generation R1 electric vehicles and the new R2. Rivian has also announced the upcoming integration of Auto Parking and On-Ramp to Off-Ramp functionalities this year, which will enable vehicles to autonomously follow a designated route on highways. Further insights into the company's autonomous driving strategy are expected to be unveiled at the forthcoming Autonomy & AI Day event. It is important to note that, much like other advanced driver-assistance systems such as Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised), Rivian's hands-free technologies necessitate continuous driver supervision, emphasizing that while drivers' hands may be off the wheel, their eyes must remain on the road.
