Revival of Santa Maria Speedway: A Family's Commitment to Preserving Local Heritage

A cherished landmark of the Central Coast, the Santa Maria Speedway, has once again become a hub of activity thanks to the dedication of a local family. After more than a year of inactivity, the historic dirt track reopened this spring under new ownership. Pat Cusack and his family acquired the speedway with the aim of not only maintaining a racing venue but also safeguarding a piece of local history that has been integral to the community since 1964. Their efforts have breathed new life into the facility, ensuring its legacy endures for future generations.
In just a few months, from January to late April, the Cusack family worked tirelessly to prepare the track for racing. This involved significant upgrades to infrastructure, electrical systems, plumbing, and facilities. They rallied a wide network of volunteers and family members to assist in the restoration process. Pat’s son Scotty and niece Rachel played pivotal roles in managing operations and social media, transforming the endeavor into a true team effort.
The Cusacks view their involvement with the speedway as both a duty and an honor. They recognize the importance of preserving grassroots dirt track racing and the deep-rooted connection it holds with the local community. Many families in Santa Maria have historical ties to the speedway, whether as racers or loyal spectators. Pat emphasizes the uniqueness of the track and the necessity of maintaining such a distinctive part of the area’s identity.
Part of the Cusacks’ mission is to ensure the legacy of the speedway is honored and passed down to younger generations. With the 2024 season already underway, the schedule features over 20 races through November, attracting both local and out-of-state participants. These events draw longtime fans as well as newcomers, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with the sounds of roaring engines and enthusiastic cheers. The speedway remains woven into the fabric of the community, offering a unique experience that resonates with all who attend.
Through their hard work and passion, the Cusack family has successfully revived the Santa Maria Speedway, ensuring it continues to be a celebrated part of the region’s cultural heritage. As the track roars back to life, it serves as a testament to the power of community and the enduring appeal of dirt track racing. The Cusacks’ commitment ensures that this special place will remain a cherished memory for many and a new adventure for others.
