Jake Plender's journey began unexpectedly in 2015 when he acquired a 1989 Mitsubishi Mighty Max from Craigslist. Initially intended as a temporary vehicle, its frequent breakdowns soon sparked an ambitious project. Discovering the truck's original engine shared lineage with the high-performance 4G63T found in iconic Mitsubishi models like the Lancer Evolution, Plender envisioned transforming the humble pickup into a powerhouse. This realization fueled an obsession, leading him to sell his other vehicle and dedicate himself to creating a unique, high-horsepower custom build.
The build, which Plender humorously refers to as an "Extra Mighty Max," is far more than a simple engine swap. It incorporates a reinforced bottom end from a 1991 Eagle Talon and a DOHC head from a 4G63 engine, alongside an HX35 turbocharger adapted from a diesel Dodge. The result is a formidable powertrain capable of producing approximately 420 horsepower on standard gasoline and nearly 500 horsepower when running on E85 fuel. Beyond the engine, the vehicle features a Toyota Supra gearbox, requiring significant cabin modifications for proper fitment, a Ford 8.8-inch limited-slip rear differential, Sparco racing seats, and a custom-fabricated roll cage designed for subtlety. An AEM ECU and digital dashboard, integrated from the Eagle Talon donor car, manage the truck's advanced systems, reflecting a "budget-conscious, all go, no show" philosophy, with most components sourced secondhand.
This ongoing project continues to evolve, with recent upgrades including an enhanced intake manifold, a larger throttle body, and improved under-hood heat management. Plender's current objective is to achieve a ten-second quarter-mile time, a significant leap from the Mighty Max's original 20-second capability.
