Prinoth and Scania Collaborate on Electric Snow Groomers

Prinoth, a leader in winter equipment, has joined forces with Swedish trucking giant Scania to develop and deploy advanced battery-electric snow groomers. This collaboration aims to bring two innovative models, the Prinoth Husky and the Leitwolf E-Motion, to Europe's ski slopes, powered by Scania's robust Core 800 lithium-ion battery system. These electric machines are designed to operate efficiently and reliably in demanding cold environments, featuring up to 624 kWh of battery capacity to ensure extended operation throughout the winter season.
Scania's contribution to this partnership is its sophisticated Core 800 li-ion battery system. This 691V solution incorporates integrated liquid cooling and a proprietary charging management system, all built around energy-dense, modular, and scalable battery packs. These packs can range from 21 kWh to an impressive 624 kWh, providing ample power for continuous snow grooming operations. Elin Åkerström, Managing Director of Scania Industrial Batteries, emphasized the technical challenges and pride in adapting their battery technology for such extreme conditions, noting the high power demands, cold climate resilience, and vibration resistance required for snow groomers.
The partnership extends to two specific models: an electric version of the Prinoth Husky and the recently unveiled Leitwolf E-Motion. The Leitwolf E-Motion is particularly notable for its flexible battery placement, utilizing both top and side orientations to accommodate higher energy and power needs. This innovative design expands the operational possibilities for Prinoth's heavy-duty snow groomers, allowing them to tackle even more diverse and challenging tasks on the slopes. This strategic integration of Scania's advanced battery technology is a testament to the commitment of both companies to sustainable and high-performance winter maintenance solutions.
The relationship between Prinoth and Scania is not new, tracing back several years, with the first Scania battery-equipped Prinoth snow groomers making their debut in 2022. Since then, these zero-emission machines have consistently demonstrated their capability and even superiority over diesel-powered equipment in extreme cold weather conditions. Roberto Pegoraro, Prinoth's Head of R&D Snow Groomers, highlighted the high quality of Scania's battery systems, which have undergone rigorous testing in some of the world's most challenging environmental settings. He also praised Scania's technical expertise and dedication to meeting Prinoth's specific requirements, emphasizing the continuous collaborative efforts to enhance their products.
Scania's industrial battery systems are versatile, finding applications across various sectors, including mining, construction, agriculture, and logistics vehicles. They are also integral to energy storage solutions and airport ground support equipment. This broad range of applications underscores the adaptability and robustness of Scania's battery technology. The success of the partnership with Prinoth further solidifies Scania's position as a key provider of electric power solutions for demanding industrial machinery, contributing significantly to the decarbonization of heavy equipment operations.
The collaboration between Prinoth and Scania represents a significant advancement in electric heavy machinery, particularly for cold-weather applications. By leveraging Scania's powerful and reliable battery systems, Prinoth is enhancing its snow groomer lineup with models that offer superior performance and environmental benefits. This initiative not only addresses the operational demands of ski resorts but also sets a new standard for sustainable practices in winter maintenance, proving that electric vehicles can outperform traditional options even in the harshest conditions.
