Passenger Screens in Cars: A Feature Automakers Overestimate






A recent study by J.D. Power highlights a notable disconnect between automotive manufacturers' enthusiasm for passenger-side infotainment screens and actual consumer usage. The findings suggest that these increasingly common displays, often touted as a premium feature, are frequently overlooked or problematic for many car owners. This raises questions about the true demand for such elaborate in-car technology.
Automakers' Bet on Passenger Displays Faces Reality Check
In a detailed report released by J.D. Power in August 2026, based on their U.S. Tech Experience Index (TXI) Study, it was revealed that approximately 35% of owners whose vehicles are equipped with a passenger screen have never utilized it. Furthermore, a mere 6% of drivers reported consistent use of the display during every trip. The study, which surveyed 68,084 owners of 2026 model year vehicles three months after purchase (data collected from June 2025 to May 2026, covering vehicles registered between March 2025 and February 2026), also identified that passenger screens contribute to a higher incidence of in-car technology issues, with an average of 21.3 problems per 100 vehicles.
While car manufacturers increasingly integrate these screens into new models, moving beyond luxury brands to mainstream vehicles, consumer sentiment appears to favor simplicity. These displays are typically marketed as entertainment hubs for front-seat occupants, offering features like video streaming, web browsing, and climate control adjustments. However, the study implies that many passengers already rely on their personal smartphones for such functions, rendering the integrated car screens redundant or less appealing.
For the most part, these passenger screens remain optional features, giving consumers some choice. Yet, certain high-end models, such as the updated BMW 7 Series, now include a 14.6-inch passenger display as standard equipment, foregoing the option for its removal. In contrast, other manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz are experimenting with different approaches; some newer Mercedes models come with a non-touch-sensitive 10.3-inch “digitally animated trim panel,” which serves more as a digital photo frame than an interactive display. The broader implication from the J.D. Power study is that the complexity introduced by additional screens can lead to increased infotainment system problems overall, suggesting a potential trade-off between technological sophistication and user satisfaction.
This research serves as a crucial reminder for automotive manufacturers. While technological advancements are certainly important, their value is ultimately determined by user adoption and experience. The trend towards digitizing every aspect of a vehicle's interior, often at the expense of traditional physical controls, might not align with consumer preferences. Perhaps it's time for the industry to reconsider whether more screens truly equate to a better user experience, or if a more balanced approach integrating functionality with reliability and user-friendliness would be more beneficial.
