Optimizing Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Range: The Impact of Smaller Wheels and Tires




An electric vehicle owner has demonstrated a substantial increase in the highway driving range of their Hyundai Ioniq 5 N by modifying the vehicle's wheel and tire setup. The experiment revealed that transitioning from the stock 21-inch wheels to a smaller 20-inch configuration, coupled with more efficient tires, led to an approximate 12% enhancement in highway efficiency. This discovery underscores the critical role that wheel and tire specifications play in the overall performance and energy consumption of electric vehicles.
The owner, operating the YouTube channel "Downshift," embarked on this modification journey due to the Ioniq 5 N's EPA-rated range of 221 miles, which is notably less than the 290-mile rating of its non-N counterpart with the same battery pack. A primary factor for this discrepancy was identified as the N model's larger 21-inch forged wheels and wider 275-section Pirelli P Zero performance tires.
Initially, the owner replaced the original tires with Kumho Majesty 9 EV tires, known for their low-rolling-resistance profile. This change resulted in an efficiency improvement from 3.3 miles per kilowatt-hour (mi/kWh) to 3.6 mi/kWh during a 30-mile mixed-driving test. However, recognizing that these dedicated EV tires somewhat compromised the vehicle's handling characteristics, a further adjustment was made.
The owner then installed custom 20-inch Demon Forged wheels fitted with more performance-oriented Kumho Ecsta Sport all-season tires. This setup further boosted efficiency to 3.7 mi/kWh on the same mixed-driving route. More significantly, highway efficiency at a steady 75 mph improved from 2.5 mi/kWh with the stock wheels to 2.8 mi/kWh over a 120-mile test, marking a clear 12% increase.
While the owner calculated a theoretical range of 310 miles based on the 3.7 mi/kWh efficiency, it's important to note that this figure is an extrapolation and not the result of a full, verified range test. Nevertheless, the findings align with similar studies on other electric vehicles, such as the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, which have also shown that smaller wheels and less aggressive tires can lead to meaningful gains in energy efficiency and driving range.
