OpenAI Product Manager Shares Insights on AI Prompting Strategies

OpenAI product manager Ty Geri employs unique prompting methods when engaging with artificial intelligence. His strategies involve instructing ChatGPT to "impress" him and utilizing extensive voice dictations to organize his thoughts. These techniques exemplify a changing landscape in product management, where direct interaction with AI tools is becoming crucial for innovation and efficiency. Geri's insights shed light on how professionals can leverage AI for enhanced productivity.

OpenAI Product Manager Ty Geri's Innovative AI Interaction Strategies

In a recent interview, Ty Geri, a product manager at OpenAI, revealed his distinctive approach to interacting with AI models like ChatGPT. Geri, who previously contributed to AI search products at Google, has developed methods that, while unconventional, he finds highly effective in his daily work. He consistently prompts ChatGPT with the command, "Please impress me," a personal quirk he believes encourages the AI to deliver superior results, even if he admits the impact might be psychological.

Geri's second key strategy involves lengthy, unscripted voice dictations. He describes these sessions as "long rants," where he speaks his thoughts aloud to ChatGPT, allowing the AI to process and extract coherent ideas. This process, which he likens to having a "partner" that can discern what is truly "sticking" from a stream of consciousness, is often conducted in OpenAI's meeting rooms. This method mirrors the practices of other AI pioneers, such as Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI who later worked at Tesla and recently joined Anthropic, known for his 10-minute "total mess" voice sessions with large language models (LLMs).

Geri's experiences underscore a significant evolution in the role of a product manager. In the past, product managers often relied on data scientists for intricate analysis. However, with the advent of powerful AI tools, the process has become more fluid and dynamic. Modern product managers are now empowered to directly engage with these technologies, reducing dependencies and accelerating their ability to take action. Geri advises his peers to embrace this change, emphasizing that AI eliminates many previous limitations and enables product managers to achieve virtually anything. He highlights that at OpenAI, product managers frequently engage in coding, reflecting a broader, more integrated approach to product development where the ultimate goal is to deliver the best user experience.

The increasing sophistication of AI tools is fundamentally transforming professional roles, particularly in product management. Ty Geri's innovative prompting techniques demonstrate a proactive adaptation to this new technological frontier. His emphasis on direct, uninhibited interaction with AI for brainstorming and problem-solving suggests that future success in tech may hinge on creative and fearless engagement with artificial intelligence. This shift calls for professionals to shed traditional constraints and explore the full potential of AI as a collaborative partner, ultimately fostering greater autonomy and impact in their work.

The Dominance of AI Applications in Corporate America

A recent analysis highlights a pivotal shift in the corporate technology landscape, where artificial intelligence applications are not only proliferating but also reshaping how businesses operate. The report indicates a dual trend: the rapid adoption of specialized AI tools from innovative startups and the continued reliance on AI-enhanced offerings from established tech behemoths.

Details of the AI Application Surge in Corporate Environments

In a comprehensive study conducted between June 2022 and June 2026, Okta's Enterprise AI Index meticulously tracked the ascent of various AI-powered software solutions within corporate America. The findings underscore a dynamic interplay between emerging disruptors and seasoned industry leaders.

Among the companies experiencing the most significant growth in corporate customer adoption, Anthropic leads the pack, demonstrating a remarkable surge in its user base. Closely following are OpenAI, a pioneer in advanced AI models, and Cursor, an innovative platform gaining rapid traction. These newer entities are successfully carving out niches by offering cutting-edge AI capabilities that cater to specific business needs.

However, the report also emphasizes the enduring strength of traditional software providers. Giants like Google Workspace, GitHub, Microsoft 365, Slack, Adobe, Notion, Canva, and Zoom are not merely retaining their market share but are actively listed among the fastest-growing AI applications. This suggests that businesses are not discarding their familiar tools in favor of entirely new AI-native solutions. Instead, they are strategically adopting a hybrid approach, incorporating both novel, purpose-built AI tools and leveraging the augmented AI functionalities integrated into their existing software ecosystems. This dual strategy allows companies to benefit from specialized AI innovations while maintaining continuity and efficiency with their established operational frameworks.

The current trajectory of AI adoption in the corporate sector illuminates a fascinating period of transformation. It's evident that businesses are seeking a balanced approach, eager to harness the power of AI for efficiency and innovation, yet cautious about wholesale overhauls. This trend suggests that successful AI integration will likely involve a blend of specialized tools and enhanced legacy systems, pushing both established players and new entrants to continuously innovate and adapt to evolving business demands.

A Family's Year-Long European Adventure in a Camper Van

This article recounts a family's decision to leave their traditional lives behind for a year of adventure, traveling across Europe in a custom-built camper van. It delves into the challenges and triumphs of balancing remote work, homeschooling, and the unique experiences gained from a nomadic lifestyle, ultimately highlighting the transformative power of experiential learning and family bonding.

Embrace the Journey: A Year of Discovery on the Open Road

Embarking on a Grand European Tour in a Home-on-Wheels

In August 2024, our family of four, including my husband, Illya, and our eight-year-old twin daughters, departed from Bristol, UK. Our destination was Dover, where we would board a cross-channel ferry. This was no ordinary vacation; it marked the beginning of a year-long expedition across Europe in our meticulously crafted camper van, affectionately named Phileas.

The Vision: Remote Work Meets Roadschooling

Our ambitious plan involved me continuing to operate my marketing agency while on the move, leveraging the flexibility of remote work. Meanwhile, Illya, embracing his role as a stay-at-home father, would oversee our twins' homeschooling and manage the daily practicalities of our mobile existence. The setup initially appeared seamless and foolproof.

Initial Hurdles: Connectivity and Adapting to the Unforeseen

Our arrival in Dunkirk, following a smooth ferry crossing, was met with an immediate test. Despite the picturesque setting of the French camper car park, perfect for an evening of beach play and fresh seafood, my carefully planned work schedule hit a snag. The internet signal in our van proved woefully inadequate for my scheduled client meetings.

After a frantic search, I located a local tourist office offering free Wi-Fi, allowing me to conduct my meetings, albeit with a revolving cast of tourists in the background. My client, thankfully, showed great understanding. Simultaneously, Illya battled with internet issues from the beach, attempting to supervise the children while troubleshooting connectivity – a recurring frustration throughout our travels. Over time, we found our rhythm, with me starting work early to align with UK hours, then dedicating the rest of the day to family and exploration.

Beyond Textbooks: The Evolution of Worldschooling

Our homeschooling approach naturally evolved from structured lessons to a more organic, child-led "worldschooling" experience. While we maintained a routine of math and English worksheets and German language practice via Duolingo, the most profound learning occurred through our real-world explorations.

Every new location presented a learning opportunity: mushroom identification during a Swiss woodland walk, understanding flour production at an 18th-century watermill in France, ascending Mount Vesuvius, exploring the ancient city of Pompeii, and engaging with interactive exhibits at the Leonardo Interactive Museum in Florence. Beyond academic pursuits, we enjoyed long hikes, foraged for wild strawberries, swam in mountain rivers, and built forts in the woods. Our month in Morocco, including observing Ramadan with a local family, offered invaluable cultural insights, from sharing iftar meals to camel rides and sand dune adventures in the Sahara Desert. We discovered that genuine curiosity, rather than forced instruction, ignited our children's passion for learning.

A Profound Transformation: Redefining Life's Priorities

As our year of travel drew to a close, we offered our children a choice: return to their old school or continue their home education journey. They opted for the traditional school environment, seamlessly reintegrating into playground life and forming new friendships. Their newfound confidence was evident, and their enthusiasm for nature-based activities, like mushroom hunting and birdwatching, endured alongside their interest in comics and video games.

For me, the experience led to a significant life change. The nomadic year helped me recognize the importance of life balance, prompting my decision to close my business upon our return. I now combine consulting work with a more present role as a parent and am writing a book about family van life. Many express a desire for such an adventure, and my consistent response is: "Why not you?" It wasn't always easy, but truly worthwhile endeavors rarely are. Our year of van life, challenges included, was the most enriching experience our family could have asked for.
