Ocon Disqualified from Azerbaijan GP Qualifying Over Rear Wing Flexibility

Technical Setback Mars Ocon's Azerbaijan Grand Prix Prospects
Ocon's Azerbaijan GP Qualifying Exclusion Confirmed
During the qualifying session for the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Esteban Ocon faced a significant setback. Following the conclusion of the session, his Haas vehicle underwent a mandatory technical inspection by the FIA, which ultimately led to his disqualification. This ruling means Ocon will commence Sunday's race from the pitlane, a considerable blow to his weekend aspirations.
Breach of FIA Regulations Regarding Rear Wing Flexibility
The core of Ocon's disqualification stems from a violation of the FIA's technical regulations concerning rear wing deflection. Specifically, the rear wing of his Haas car was found to exceed the permissible tolerance during a deflection test. Jo Bauer, the FIA's technical delegate, reported that the rear wing's main plane tips deflected beyond the mandated 0.5mm limit, triggering a referral to the stewards for review.
Stewards' Verdict: Production Error Leads to Penalty
The official verdict from the stewards confirmed the infringement, noting deflection measurements of 0.6mm on the left side and 0.825mm on the right side of Ocon's rear wing. While Haas acknowledged the test procedure was correctly followed, they attributed the discrepancy to a manufacturing defect in the specific component. Despite this explanation, the stewards upheld the ruling, imposing the standard penalty of disqualification from the qualifying results.
FIA's Stricter Enforcement of Aero-elasticity Rules
This incident underscores the FIA's recent efforts to crack down on teams exploiting aero-elasticity in their car designs. New, more stringent technical regulations, particularly Article 3.15.17, were introduced at the beginning of the season. These rules significantly reduced the allowed rear wing main plane deflection from 2mm to 0.5mm under a 750Nm load. Similar measures were also applied to front wing flexibility at the Spanish Grand Prix in June, indicating a broader focus on ensuring fair play and preventing performance gains through flexible aerodynamic components.
Impact on Ocon's Race Strategy and Haas's Performance
Although Ocon had initially qualified in a lowly 18th position due to reported braking issues during Q1, his exclusion from qualifying further complicates his race strategy. Starting from the pitlane presents an uphill battle for the Haas driver, forcing him to navigate through the entire field. Ocon himself acknowledged significant braking problems throughout the qualifying session, describing them as "out of this world" and a "day wasted," highlighting the dual challenges he and his team faced.
