NHTSA Expands Investigation into GM Brake System Failures Across Over One Million Vehicles





The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has intensified its scrutiny of General Motors' eBoost braking system, elevating its preliminary review to a full engineering analysis. This critical development impacts an astounding 1.16 million vehicles across GM, Honda, and Acura brands. This phase marks a pivotal point, as it is the final assessment stage before the regulatory body can compel a recall, highlighting growing concerns over potential safety defects. So far, 745 incidents of eBoost failure have been documented, leading to 22 reported crashes or vehicle fires and six injuries, though thankfully no fatalities have occurred.
Federal Regulators Deepen Probe into Widespread Brake Issues
On August 25, 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a significant escalation in its ongoing investigation into the eBoost braking system utilized by General Motors. This upgraded engineering analysis now targets a massive fleet of 1,164,820 vehicles, encompassing a diverse range of models from GM, Honda, and Acura, spanning model years 2023 through 2026. This comprehensive review follows an initial preliminary evaluation launched in April 2024, triggered by numerous reports from owners of the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq experiencing a sudden loss of brake assist.
The affected vehicles include electric models like the Cadillac Lyriq, Optiq, and Celestiq, as well as the Chevrolet Blazer EV and Equinox EV. Additionally, a wide array of gas and hybrid crossovers are implicated, such as the Buick Enclave and Envision, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, the Cruise Origin, and the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks. Notably, two Honda vehicles manufactured by GM, the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX—both built on GM's Ultium platform and previously subject to a recall for black-screen issues—are also included due to their shared eBoost hardware. The NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has recorded 745 distinct reports of eBoost failures, alongside 22 incidents involving crashes or fires, and six non-fatal injuries. The primary concern is the sudden loss of brake assist, which could significantly increase stopping distances and pose a serious risk to vehicle occupants.
This expansion mirrors a similar move by the NHTSA earlier this month, when it broadened its investigation into GM's L87 V8 engines, underscoring a trend of in-depth examinations into potential systemic issues across various GM platforms. Drivers who observe warning lights related to their braking system, encounter an unusually firm brake pedal, or notice any anomalous braking behavior are urged to document these incidents thoroughly and contact their dealership promptly, rather than awaiting a formal recall notice. The intricate nature of these shared components across multiple brands emphasizes the importance of a coordinated and meticulous investigation to ensure public safety.
