NASCAR Community Mourns Loss of Zach Yager, Pays Tribute at Darlington
In a poignant display of remembrance, the NASCAR community is collectively honoring Zach Yager, a revered crew member whose untimely passing earlier this month left many deeply saddened. Yager, who was just days shy of his 35th birthday, was a familiar and respected figure on pit road, contributing his expertise as a jackman, tire carrier, and even fueler throughout his distinguished career. Over more than a decade in professional racing, he lent his talents to various esteemed organizations, including Richard Childress Racing, RFK Racing, and Team Penske.
A significant highlight of Yager's career came in 2023 when he was an integral part of the pit crew for Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s No. 47 car, celebrating a monumental victory at the Daytona 500 with JTG Daugherty Racing, now known as Hyak Motorsports. More recently, Yager continued his dedicated work with RSS Racing in the Xfinity Series and ThorSport Racing in the Truck Series.
As the racing world gathers in Darlington for this weekend's events, RFK Racing has announced they will prominently display a tribute decal on their Cup Series cars in Yager's honor. Their message on social media expressed profound grief: "Our hearts are heavy this week with the passing of one of our friends and former teammates, Zach Yager. Zach was a true athlete of the sport and a friend to many in the NASCAR family. In honor of Zach, our No. 17 car will carry a tribute decal this week in Darlington. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and loved ones as we remember him together. Rest easy, Yager."
ThorSport Racing has also joined in this collective tribute, creating a unique memorial sticker for all four of their trucks. Their statement conveyed similar sentiments of loss: "This weekend all four ThorSport trucks will carry a memorial sticker in honor of our teammate and friend, Zachary Yager. We are deeply saddened by Zach's unexpected passing. He was a vital part of our pit crew family - serving in many roles over the years, most recently as Jackman on the No. 88. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and community as we remember and honor him together. Zach will be missed."
Beyond the teams, individual racing stars have also shared their grief and admiration. Chris Buescher, a celebrated Cup Series driver, and Xfinity Series regular Ryan Sieg were among those who posted moving messages, reflecting on Yager's character and contributions to the sport.
This poignant moment in Darlington serves as a powerful reminder of the tight-knit bonds within the NASCAR family, where colleagues are more than just teammates; they are an extended family. The decals are not merely symbols; they are visible expressions of collective grief, respect, and enduring remembrance for a life well-lived and a presence deeply missed.
