NASCAR Drivers Share Insights from New Hampshire Tire Test

A recent tire evaluation session at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) brought together three leading NASCAR Cup Series competitors, each representing a different manufacturer. This test, conducted by Goodyear, focused on a new, softer tire compound and holds considerable importance as the “Magic Mile” track makes its return to the NASCAR playoffs for the first time since 2016, serving as the opening venue for the Round of 12.
Among the drivers assessing the new tires was Christopher Bell, piloting the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. Bell, a two-time winner at NHMS, expressed enthusiasm for the track's inclusion in the playoffs, citing its historical significance as one of his most successful circuits. His confidence in the venue suggests a strategic advantage for him in the upcoming critical races. Ross Chastain, representing Trackhouse Racing Team in the No. 1 Chevrolet, also participated, acknowledging the substantial benefit of the test. Chastain, who has not achieved the same level of success at Loudon as Bell, emphasized the opportunity to refine both car performance and his own driving technique. He noted a previous challenge with tire issues at the track and welcomed the two-day session to gather comprehensive data, indicating a focused effort on improvement. Lastly, reigning series champion Joey Logano, driving the No. 22 Team Penske Ford, shared his deep personal connection to NHMS. The track holds a special place in his career, being the site of his maiden Cup Series victory in 2009 and serving as his closest equivalent to a home track, hailing from Middletown, Connecticut. Logano’s affection for the venue and its fans, who he noted rarely boo him there, underscores the emotional and professional significance of the track for him.
The insights from these drivers underline the multifaceted nature of tire development and race preparation in NASCAR. Their feedback will be instrumental in shaping future tire designs and race strategies, ultimately influencing the competitive landscape of the sport. Such rigorous testing ensures that both the equipment and the drivers are optimally prepared to deliver thrilling performances, maintaining the integrity and excitement of high-stakes racing.
