Mercedes-Powered F1 Cars Faced Early Power Woes at Belgian GP

At the recent Belgian Grand Prix, all Formula 1 cars utilizing Mercedes power units encountered an unexpected and critical energy deployment problem at the race's outset. Team principal Toto Wolff disclosed that this issue, linked to an unidentified battery anomaly, particularly hampered driver George Russell, ultimately contributing to his early retirement from the event. The team is now conducting a thorough investigation to determine the root cause and prevent future occurrences of this performance-inhibiting glitch.
During the start of the Belgian Grand Prix, George Russell, who began the race in third position, quickly lost ground. His car experienced a severe lack of battery charge from Eau Rouge onwards, causing a significant power deployment deficit, especially through Turn 1. This immediate disadvantage left Russell vulnerable to other competitors.
As Russell struggled with his car's power delivery, he was overtaken by Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari. Tragically, contact with Hamilton into Les Combes sent Russell's car into the gravel trap, abruptly ending his participation in the race. This incident underscored the critical impact of the power unit's malfunction.
Following the race, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff acknowledged that the battery glitch wasn't isolated to Russell's vehicle but affected all Mercedes-powered cars to varying degrees. Wolff stated, "All Mercedes engines had a lack of energy out of Turn 1, so that wasn't only George. It affected him more than Kimi [Antonelli], but also Kimi had that issue to a certain degree."
Kimi Antonelli also experienced a compromised start, initially falling behind Max Verstappen. However, Antonelli managed to regain his position by drafting past the Red Bull driver toward Turn 5, describing the initial moments as a "crazy start." He expressed confusion over the events, stating he had "no clue" what was happening as cars swarmed around him, and he focused on simply maintaining his track position.
Another Mercedes-powered driver significantly impacted by the power issue was Alpine's Pierre Gasly. He reported a complete lack of power at the start, which caused him to lose multiple positions from his tenth-place grid slot. Gasly lamented the situation, noting, "I had no power at the start, so it's clearly not good stuff to have around Spa. I had a tough start, not fast enough in the opening phase for some reason and lost some positions on the opening lap."
While other cars with Mercedes power units also exhibited some performance issues, the effects were less dramatic compared to Russell and Gasly. For instance, Williams driver Alex Albon initially had a strong start before gradually losing pace. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz's poor start was attributed to an early collision in Turn 1, necessitating a front wing replacement.
Wolff emphasized the need for a solution, acknowledging the inherent strength of their engine and car, but highlighting reliability as a persistent challenge. He stated that the lack of consistency was costing them valuable points in the constructors' championship, indicating that addressing this issue is a top priority for the team.
