Mercedes-Benz Unveils 2028 GLA-Class EV and Hybrid Models








Mercedes-Benz is set to redefine its compact SUV segment with the introduction of the 2028 GLA-Class, mirroring the strategic shift seen in its CLA sedan counterpart. The new GLA will debut as an electric vehicle, followed by a hybrid gasoline-electric version, marking a significant step in the brand's electrification journey. These new models, built on the advanced MMA platform, promise enhanced performance, expanded dimensions, and cutting-edge technology, reinforcing Mercedes-Benz's commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility. While European markets will see the EV launch this summer, American consumers can anticipate its arrival in the latter half of 2027.
The 2028 GLA-Class represents a substantial evolution from its current iteration, both in size and technological sophistication. It will be offered in multiple powertrains: the all-electric GLA250+ and GLA350, and the hybrid GLA220 and GLA250. This dual-powertrain strategy allows Mercedes-Benz to cater to a broader range of consumer preferences while embracing the future of automotive technology. The vehicle's interior has been completely reimagined, featuring an expansive digital display system and advanced artificial intelligence integration, signaling a new era of luxury and connectivity for entry-level Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
The Electric and Hybrid Powertrain Evolution
The 2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is set to launch initially with its electric variants, the GLA250+ and GLA350, marking a pivotal moment in the brand's shift towards electrification. Following the successful redesign of the CLA sedan, which also introduced both electric and hybrid options, the GLA is poised to offer similar versatility. The GLA250+ will be a rear-wheel-drive electric model, while the GLA350 will feature a more powerful all-wheel-drive configuration with dual motors. Although specific horsepower figures are yet to be confirmed, expectations, based on the CLA's performance, suggest robust outputs of approximately 268 horsepower for the GLA250+ and 349 horsepower for the GLA350. These electric models will be built on the innovative MMA platform, incorporating an 800-volt electrical architecture and an 85-kWh battery, enabling rapid charging capabilities of up to 320 kilowatts at compatible stations.
Beyond the electric lineup, Mercedes-Benz will also introduce hybrid versions of the GLA-Class. These include the front-wheel-drive GLA220 and the all-wheel-drive GLA250, both equipped with a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The GLA350, positioned as the performance-oriented EV model, is projected to achieve 0 to 60 mph in a swift 5.3 seconds. For those prioritizing range, the GLA250+ is expected to deliver an impressive driving range of about 350 miles on a single charge. The strategic offering of both electric and hybrid powertrains underscores Mercedes-Benz's adaptable approach to meeting diverse market demands and environmental considerations, providing consumers with high-performance and efficient options within the compact SUV segment.
Enhanced Design and Advanced Interior Technologies
The 2028 GLA-Class distinguishes itself with a significantly enlarged body compared to its predecessor, featuring a 2.4-inch longer wheelbase and an overall length increase of six inches. Despite its expanded footprint, the new model is marginally lower by 0.8 inches and boasts wider tracks, contributing to a more commanding and stable stance. Aesthetically, the front fascia is updated with Mercedes-Benz's signature star-shaped lighting elements in the headlights, complementing the newly designed grilles—each variant receiving a unique pattern. Notably, these grilles can also be illuminated, adding a touch of modern sophistication. The electric versions benefit from a slightly larger front trunk (frunk) than the CLA, enhancing storage convenience for EV owners.
Inside the cabin, the 2028 GLA-Class is a technological marvel, with an entirely digital dashboard designed to immerse occupants in a futuristic driving experience. The standard setup includes a 14.0-inch central touchscreen and a 10.3-inch driver's display. An optional Superscreen elevates this experience further by adding another 14.0-inch screen for the front passenger. The MBUX infotainment system is deeply integrated with advanced artificial intelligence, incorporating Google Gemini and ChatGPT for a highly intuitive virtual assistant. Innovative features such as a transparent-hood camera view and automated parking systems underscore the vehicle's commitment to convenience and safety. A panoramic glass roof comes standard, with an optional Sky Control feature allowing for variable opacity and adorned with 172 light-up stars, creating an ambient and luxurious interior environment. U.S. customers can expect to see these models in showrooms in the latter half of 2027.
