Mercedes-Benz Recalls Over 30,000 S-Class Models for Brake Hose Defect

Mercedes-Benz is initiating a recall for over 30,000 luxury sedans in the United States, encompassing its S-Class, Mercedes-Maybach, and Mercedes-AMG lines. The concern centers on a potential flaw in the front brake hoses that could lead to weakening, fluid leaks, or even rupture, posing a safety risk. This extensive campaign affects vehicles manufactured between February 2021 and late November 2024, spanning the 2022 to 2025 model years. The automaker emphasizes that no accidents, injuries, or property damage have been attributed to this specific defect thus far. Affected owners will receive notifications, and dealerships will perform the necessary brake hose replacements at no cost.
Mercedes-Benz Issues Recall for S-Class Sedans Over Brake Hose Concerns
Stuttgart, Germany – Mercedes-Benz has officially announced a recall affecting a substantial number of its premium sedans in the United States. A total of 30,064 vehicles are subject to this campaign, which targets a potential issue with the front brake hoses. The recall includes various models across the S-Class, Mercedes-Maybach, and Mercedes-AMG ranges, specifically those produced from February 2021 through November 2024, covering model years 2022 to 2025.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall document (NHTSA recall 26V638), the primary concern is that the front brake hoses may weaken over time due to heat and mechanical stress. This degradation could result in a leak of brake fluid or, in more severe cases, a complete rupture of the hose. Should this occur, hydraulic pressure to the front calipers would be compromised, leading to an increased stopping distance, which presents a significant safety hazard. While a red brake fluid warning light may illuminate on the dashboard, it typically only appears after fluid loss has already commenced, offering little pre-failure warning.
The recall population is detailed as follows: the S580 4Matic constitutes the largest portion with 16,881 units, followed by 7,143 S500 4Matic sedans, and 2,277 S580 e 4Matic plug-in hybrids. Additionally, the recall includes 1,746 AMG S63 E Performance sedans, 1,070 Maybach S680 4Matic vehicles, and 947 Maybach S580 4Matic sedans. This campaign is an expansion of a similar recall initiated by Mercedes-Benz in February 2025, prompted by subsequent reports of the issue.
Mercedes-Benz reports no incidents of crashes, injuries, or property damage linked to this defect. To rectify the problem, authorized Mercedes-Benz dealerships will replace the affected front brake hoses with an improved design at no charge to the owners. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed by November 27, 2026. Vehicles manufactured after November 28, 2024, are equipped with the revised hose design and are not included in this recall.
This proactive measure from Mercedes-Benz underscores the automotive industry's commitment to vehicle safety and continuous improvement. It reminds us that even high-end luxury vehicles can experience component issues, and timely recalls are crucial for maintaining consumer trust and ensuring road safety. Owners of affected models are encouraged to heed the recall notice promptly and schedule the necessary repair to ensure their vehicle's braking system operates optimally.
