Mercedes-Benz Group's Electric Vehicle Sales Dynamics in Q1 2025

In the first quarter of 2025, the Mercedes-Benz Group reported a shift in its electric vehicle (EV) sales performance. With a total of 45,500 EVs sold across both passenger cars and vans, this figure represents a decline compared to the previous year. The passenger car division specifically experienced a drop in battery-electric vehicle (BEV) deliveries by 14%. This decrease was attributed to model transitions, particularly after the discontinuation of the electric smart in Europe. Despite these challenges, the company remains optimistic about upcoming models like the all-new CLA, which is set to debut in European markets soon. Additionally, plug-in hybrid sales saw an increase, contributing to an overall electrification rate of 19.4% within Mercedes-Benz Cars.
The phasing out of the electric smart significantly impacted sales figures for Mercedes-Benz Cars, especially in Germany and other European markets. This transition left high-volume model series under pressure. However, the top-end segment witnessed a slight growth in sales, with Mercedes-AMG reporting a global increase of 17%. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Mercedes-Benz aims to regain momentum through innovative product launches and strategic adjustments.
Within the van division, total sales decreased by 21%, reaching 82,900 units. Nevertheless, there was a positive trend in fully electric van sales, which increased by 59%. Klaus Rehkugler, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans Sales & Marketing, highlighted that this growth translates to a global BEV share of 6% in the first quarter. Such developments underscore the company’s commitment to expanding its electric offerings while addressing market demands.
The upcoming launch of the new CLA marks a pivotal moment for Mercedes-Benz as it seeks to strengthen its position in the EV market.
