The latest electric CLA45, equipped with a sophisticated electric motor system, promises a thrilling driving experience. While its top-tier performance figures and rapid acceleration are sure to excite, the vehicle also incorporates innovative features designed to enhance the sensory aspect of electric driving. The exclusion of the U.S. market means that fans will need to look elsewhere for their high-performance electric vehicle needs, as this model will primarily cater to European and other global markets.

Electrifying Performance and Dynamic Handling

The core narrative surrounding the new Mercedes-AMG CLA45 EV is undoubtedly its formidable powertrain. For those receptive to electric propulsion, this vehicle offers a compelling blend of speed and engineering. Powering this electric beast are three axial-flux motors—two on the rear axle and one on the front—which collectively generate a temporary maximum output of 670 horsepower, with a continuous output of 603 horsepower. This immense power allows the new electric CLA to sprint from a standstill to 62 mph in a mere 2.7 seconds, a full second faster than its predecessor, which was rated at 382 horsepower. The significant increase in power and acceleration firmly places the electric CLA45 at the forefront of high-performance electric compact cars.

Beyond raw power, the vehicle's top speed capabilities are equally impressive. When equipped with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, the electric CLA45 can reach a maximum speed of 167 mph, dropping slightly to 155 mph without the package. Mercedes-AMG has also integrated unique features to enhance the driving sensation, such as simulated gear shifts, seat vibrations, and a meticulously crafted artificial engine sound. Instead of generic electric vehicle sounds, engineers recorded over 1600 audio files from an AMG four-cylinder engine in various driving conditions, ensuring an authentic and engaging auditory experience for every scenario. This attention to detail aims to bridge the sensory gap between traditional internal combustion engines and modern electric powertrains, providing an immersive and exciting drive.

Battery Technology and Market Availability

The advanced electric motor system of the Mercedes-AMG CLA45 EV is supported by a robust 94-kWh battery. Mercedes claims that this battery pack provides an estimated range of 416 miles for the sedan variant and 397 miles for the Shooting Brake version, based on the European WLTP testing cycle. While these figures are promising, it is anticipated that the EPA ratings for the United States would be closer to 353 miles and 338 miles, respectively. Regardless, the new AMG CLA demonstrates commendable charging capabilities, with Mercedes quoting a maximum charging rate of 330 kW. This rapid charging technology allows the battery to replenish from 10 percent to 80 percent in approximately 22 minutes, offering convenience and efficiency for long journeys.

Despite its remarkable engineering and performance, a significant point of concern for many enthusiasts is the vehicle's market availability. Mercedes has explicitly stated that the electric AMG CLA45 will not be sold in the United States. This decision means that American consumers will not have the opportunity to purchase or test drive this high-performance electric model. Instead, they will be limited to more standard CLA-class EV options available in the U.S. market. The unavailability of such an innovative and powerful electric vehicle in a major automotive market like the United States highlights regional variations in product offerings and strategic market positioning by manufacturers, leaving many admirers of the electric CLA45 to appreciate it from afar.

This exclusive model, limited to only 200 units worldwide, represents a significant step forward in power and aerodynamic sophistication within McLaren's line of mid-engine V-8 supercars. Building on a heritage that began with the 720S in 2017, the 788HS pushes the boundaries of performance with enhanced engine output and advanced track-focused features, ensuring it stands as a pinnacle of automotive engineering and exclusivity.

The new 788HS is powered by a recalibrated twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, now delivering an impressive 777 horsepower, marking a 37 horsepower increase over the standard 750S. This power upgrade translates to 788 PS, which is reflected in the car's nomenclature. Despite the power boost, the torque remains at 590 pound-feet, while McLaren has managed to reduce the dry weight to 2789 pounds, making it slightly lighter than the 750S. This combination of increased power and reduced weight contributes to its blistering acceleration, with McLaren claiming a 0-60 mph sprint in just 2.8 seconds and a 0-124 mph time of 7.0 seconds. The vehicle's top speed is rated at 205 mph, and a refined engine-mount calibration aims to intensify the connection between the driver and powertrain, further enhanced by a new quad-exit titanium exhaust system for a more engaging auditory experience.

Aerodynamic advancements are a key highlight of the 788HS, with a suite of carbon-fiber components designed to optimize downforce. A novel S-duct in the hood channels air efficiently over the cabin, directing it towards a large, raised active rear wing. Complementing this, a sharper front splitter and a redesigned diffuser, drawing inspiration from McLaren's Formula 1 expertise, work in unison to provide 10 percent more downforce compared to the 765LT. The suspension system, featuring McLaren's unique hydraulic diagonal connections instead of traditional anti-roll bars, has been fine-tuned for the 788HS, and the car sits 0.2 inches lower at the front. Braking performance is significantly improved with carbon-ceramic discs, borrowed from the McLaren Senna, paired with six-piston forged aluminum monoblock front calipers. For the first time in the 720S lineage, the 788HS features center-lock wheels, underscoring its track-ready credentials.

Inside, the cabin retains most of its familiar layout but introduces bespoke touches to signify its exclusivity. A new carbon-fiber center console, seats with a distinctive perforation pattern, and unique HS badges, along with 788HS logos embroidered into the headrests, distinguish this limited edition. A special plaque within the car denotes its production number and its place in McLaren's history. With only 100 coupes and 100 Spider convertibles slated for production, each customized by McLaren Special Operations, the 788HS will be a rare collector's item. While pricing details have not been released, it is anticipated to significantly exceed the 750S's cost, reflecting its enhanced performance and limited availability. McLaren describes the 788HS as the definitive and final evolution of the acclaimed supercar lineage that commenced with the 720S, with a successor to the 750S expected around 2028, potentially bringing substantial innovations following McLaren's merger with Forseven and acquisition by CYVN Holdings.
