Mazda's EZ-60 EV SUV Garners Significant Pre-Orders and Gears Up for Global Debut

In a significant stride towards its electric future, Mazda's latest offering, the EZ-60 electric SUV, has rapidly captured market interest. This model, roughly comparable in dimensions to the Tesla Model Y, has already secured an impressive number of pre-orders in China, signaling strong consumer confidence and setting the stage for its impending worldwide release.
The Mazda EZ-60 represents a pivotal development for the Japanese automaker, emerging from its collaboration with Changan in China. As the first fully electric sport utility vehicle from this joint venture, it embodies Mazda's renewed focus on electric mobility. Unveiled on April 23rd, the EZ-60 swiftly garnered attention, with over 10,000 pre-orders placed within just 24 hours of its debut. This initial surge was followed by sustained demand, pushing the total pre-orders past 20,000 last month, and now exceeding 30,000 within a mere two-month period, as officially announced by the company on Weibo.
A notable trend among these early adopters is the strong representation of younger demographics, with 66% of pre-order holders falling within the 25 to 39 age bracket. This demographic identifies the EZ-60 as a 'light luxury choice,' attracted by its sophisticated features. The vehicle's interior boasts cutting-edge technology, including a sprawling 27-inch curved touchscreen for infotainment and a 100-inch naked-eye 3D head-up display (HUD), which particularly appealed to one postdoctoral student, who cited the advanced tech as a key selling point.
To further entice prospective buyers, Mazda has implemented an innovative '10 yuan purchase fund' incentive. By placing a refundable deposit of just 10 yuan (approximately $1.40 USD), customers can watch their investment grow daily. This unique scheme also allows pre-order holders to earn additional bonuses by completing various tasks, which can then be applied towards the vehicle's final purchase price.
Underpinning the EZ-60 is Changan's versatile hybrid platform, providing both a purely electric (EV) variant and an extended-range option. The EV model is equipped with a 77.9 kWh CATL LFP battery pack, promising a CLTC range of 600 kilometers (around 372 miles). For those seeking greater versatility, the extended-range version integrates a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, extending the combined range to an impressive 1,300 kilometers.
In terms of size, the EZ-60 measures 4,850 mm in length, 1,935 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height, making it slightly longer than the Tesla Model Y. Changan Mazda is gearing up for the official launch of the EZ-60 in September, with pricing details and further specifications expected closer to that date. Following its China debut, the electric SUV is slated for release in international markets, including Europe, where it will be rebranded as the Mazda CX-6e. This mirrors Mazda's strategy with the EZ-6 electric sedan, which is sold as the 6e in Europe and offers two battery capacities, 68.8 kWh and 80 kWh, delivering WLTP ranges of 479 km (300 miles) and 552 km (343 miles) respectively.
The strong initial reception of the EZ-60 in China highlights Mazda's increasing competitiveness in the electric vehicle sector, laying a solid foundation for its international expansion and showcasing its commitment to sustainable mobility solutions.
