According to recent analyses from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), particularly those reviewed by the SUN DAY Campaign, the total installed capacity of renewable energy, encompassing new small-scale solar installations, is anticipated to exceed that of natural gas by the summer of 2027, potentially even sooner. This projection underscores a pivotal moment in the nation's pursuit of a sustainable energy future.
Accelerated Growth in Clean Energy Generation
Projections indicate a substantial increase in US generating capacity from renewables and battery storage, with an estimated addition of approximately 82.9 gigawatts (GW) by June 30, 2027. Conversely, the combined capacity of fossil fuels and nuclear power is expected to experience a reduction of nearly 3.1 GW, further highlighting the accelerating shift away from conventional energy sources.
Renewables Drive Significant Increase in Electricity Production
The EIA's latest "Electric Power Monthly" report, detailing data up to June 30, 2026, reveals an impressive 10.9% surge in renewably generated electricity during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. This growth was predominantly fueled by utility-scale solar, which saw a 21.6% increase, small-scale solar with a 13.0% rise, hydropower growing by 10.1%, and wind power expanding by 6.5%.
Comparing Growth Trajectories: Renewables Versus Traditional Sources
In stark contrast to the rapid expansion of renewables, the electrical output from US nuclear power and natural gas facilities witnessed much slower growth rates of 1.7% and 1.8%, respectively. Meanwhile, electricity production from coal plants experienced a significant decline of 11.3%, reinforcing the trend of decreasing reliance on carbon-intensive energy sources.
Wind and Solar Lead US Electricity Production
Combined, wind and solar energy, including small-scale solar, contributed a substantial 22.3% to the domestic electricity production. Notably, in June alone, solar-generated electricity surpassed the combined output of wind and hydropower, establishing itself as the leading renewable energy source for that month. During the first half of 2026, wind and solar collectively produced 58% more electricity than US coal plants and 28% more than nuclear facilities.
Overall Renewable Contribution to US Electrical Generation
When factoring in all renewable energy sources, including biomass and geothermal, they accounted for 30.2% of the total US electrical generation in the first half of 2026, marking an increase from 27.8% a year prior. This upward trajectory signifies a growing commitment to diverse clean energy solutions.
Remarkable Increase in Renewable Energy Capacity Over the Past Year
Between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026, the installed capacity of utility-scale solar surged by 28,076.7 MW, while small-scale solar and wind capacities grew by 6,492.0 MW and 10,552.9 MW, respectively, with offshore wind contributing 800 MW. The cumulative capacity of all renewable energy sources, encompassing hydropower, biomass, and geothermal, expanded by an impressive 44,889.3 MW.
Growth in Battery Storage and Declines in Fossil Fuels
Alongside renewable energy, utility-scale battery energy storage capacity also saw a substantial increase of 17,858.8 MW. In contrast, coal capacity declined by 3,993.6 MW, and nuclear capacity slightly decreased by 28.2 MW. Natural gas capacity, however, experienced an increase of 7,529.8 MW, indicating its continued, albeit slower, expansion.
A Decade of Unprecedented Renewable Capacity Doubling
Over the past decade, renewable energy's contribution to US electrical generation has nearly doubled, rising from 16.9% at the end of June 2016 to 30.2% by mid-2026. Solar's share alone grew from 1.3% to 4.1% within five years, while wind's share expanded from 6.0% to 9.6% over the same period.
Exponential Growth in Solar and Wind Power Generation
The remarkable increase in electricity generated by solar and wind over the last decade is a direct result of their expanding generating capacities. Since mid-2016, installed solar capacity has increased more than ninefold, with utility-scale capacity growing over eleven times and small-scale systems more than sixfold. In just the past five years, the combined capacity of utility-scale and small-scale solar has nearly tripled, demonstrating accelerated adoption.
Wind Energy and Battery Storage See Significant Expansion
Wind energy generating capacity has also seen substantial growth, increasing by nearly a third (32.7%) over the last five years and more than doubling in the past decade. Furthermore, utility-scale battery energy storage systems, which were negligible in 2016, soared to 51,665.7 MW by the end of June 2026, marking a nearly twentyfold increase in five years.
Future Projections: Continued Dominance of Utility-Scale Renewables
The rapid growth observed in renewables over the past decade is expected to continue into the coming year. As of June 30, 2026, renewable energy constituted 34.3% of total US utility-scale generating capacity, a figure projected to rise to 37.1% by June 30, 2027. Utility-scale solar is set to add 43,649.2 MW, increasing its share from 13.3% to 16.2%, while wind power will grow by 10,216.8 MW, including 4,165.0 MW of offshore wind, moving from 13.4% to 13.6%. Other renewables such as hydropower, biomass, and geothermal will contribute an additional 259.7 MW.
Record-Breaking Capacity Additions and Declining Fossil Fuel Reliance
The total net capacity growth from all utility-scale renewable energy sources over the 12-month period is projected to be 54,125.7 MW, a 41% increase compared to the previous year's additions. Concurrently, the EIA forecasts no new nuclear generating capacity and a net decline of 3,143.4 MW in fossil fuel capacity, solidifying the trend towards renewable energy dominance.
Small-Scale Solar's Crucial Role in Achieving Capacity Milestones
With the inclusion of new small-scale solar installations, renewable energy's capacity is anticipated to surpass natural gas by summer 2027 or earlier. Although the EIA does not provide a specific forecast for small-scale solar, conservative estimates suggest an additional 6,000 MW or more will come online, bringing renewable energy's total installed capacity to approximately 546,219.4 MW, significantly outweighing natural gas's projected 518,286.3 MW. This would elevate solar power's share alone to over 20.4% of total US generating capacity.
Anticipated Surge in Battery Storage Capacity
The EIA predicts a substantial increase in battery energy storage, with an additional 22,788.4 MW by July 1, 2027, representing a 44% rise and bringing the total to 74,454.1 MW. This expansion in energy storage, combined with utility-scale renewable sources and small-scale solar, could deliver over 83,000 MW of new clean energy capacity by early summer 2027.

He suggests that, despite political challenges, all indicators point towards an even more rapid expansion of clean energy in the upcoming year.
