Kia's EV2 Electric SUV Dominates UK Market with Strong Demand

Kia's EV2, a compact electric SUV, has made a remarkable entry into the European market, particularly in the UK, demonstrating a substantial and immediate demand since its launch. This vehicle's success, alongside other electric models in Kia's diverse lineup, has propelled the brand to unprecedented sales figures and a prominent position in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle landscape.
Kia EV2 Drives Unprecedented Sales and Market Growth Across Europe
The Kia EV2, the manufacturer's smallest electric SUV, has exhibited an exceptional market performance since its order books opened across Europe and the UK in April. Over its initial three months, Kia successfully sold more than 8,000 units of the EV2. This significant achievement played a pivotal role in Kia recording its highest-ever third-quarter sales, a milestone not seen since the company began selling vehicles in 1962. Consequently, Kia has emerged as the fastest-growing brand among the top ten car manufacturers in Europe, supported by a comprehensive range of electric vehicles from the entry-level EV2 to the spacious EV9 and the versatile PV5 van. The EV2's strong debut is a key factor in Kia's impressive 58% year-on-year surge in EV registrations through August, securing the brand's seventh position in the overall European EV market with a 4.8% share. Notably, specific markets like France (+120%), Germany (+112%), the UK (+66%), Spain (+60%), and Italy (+41%) witnessed particularly robust demand for Kia's electric offerings. In the UK, a critical market, the EV2, despite commencing full-scale customer deliveries only in mid-Q3, garnered 3,386 registrations year-to-date, with an impressive 1,753 units registered in September alone, establishing it as the UK's most popular retail-market EV with 1,429 registrations in September. Kia's electric vehicle deliveries in the UK reached 31,813 units year-to-date, accounting for over 33% of its total registrations, positioning Kia as the second best-selling electric car brand in the UK, trailing only Tesla. The EV2 Air long edition, priced from £24,245 (including the government's £3,750 Electric Clean Car Grant), is available in four trim levels: Light, Air, Earth, and GT-Line. Buyers can choose between two battery options, a 42.2 kWh pack offering a WLTP range of up to 317 km (197 miles) or a 61 kWh pack extending the range to 453 km (281 miles). Beyond passenger vehicles, Kia's PV5 Cargo electric work van also leads its segment as the UK's best-selling small electric commercial vehicle, with 4,654 registrations year-to-date. The PV5 Passenger model further demonstrated its popularity, becoming the top-selling van-derived car in September with 390 registrations, contributing to 1,704 year-to-date sales. While the EV2 and PV5 are not available in the US market, the 2027 EV3 has launched with a starting price of approximately $30,000, selling over 500 units in its inaugural month and positioning Kia for a potential fourth consecutive record sales year in the US.
The overwhelming success of Kia's EV2 underscores a significant shift in consumer preference towards sustainable transportation solutions. It highlights the growing importance of offering a diverse range of electric vehicles that cater to various needs and budgets. The rapid adoption of the EV2, particularly in the UK, signals a robust market appetite for accessible and efficient electric SUVs, urging other manufacturers to accelerate their EV development and deployment. This trend not only benefits the environment but also demonstrates the economic viability and strong demand for electric mobility, paving the way for a greener automotive future.
