During a recent appearance on the "Road to Success" podcast, Jessica Hawkins firmly rejected the idea that women lack the physical capacity to compete in Formula 1. Recalling her own experience testing the Aston Martin AMR21 in Hungary in 2023, Hawkins emphasized her ability to complete a full race simulation, with the only limiting factor being neck fatigue.
Neck Fatigue: A Universal Challenge, Not a Gender Barrier
Hawkins clarified that the neck strain she experienced is a common issue for any driver transitioning into a high-downforce F1 car without consistent prior exposure to such conditions, regardless of gender. This suggests that with adequate training and preparation, female drivers can overcome this hurdle just as their male counterparts do.
The Junior Series Hurdle: F2 and F3's Physical Demands
While F1 cars benefit from power steering, a crucial advantage for drivers, the feeder series like Formula 2 and Formula 3 are notably devoid of this feature. This design choice results in exceptionally heavy steering, presenting a unique and demanding physical challenge that Hawkins identifies as a potential roadblock for female talent trying to ascend the motorsport ladder.
Bridging the Gap: The Need for Adjustments in Junior Categories
Hawkins raised a pertinent question regarding the strenuous physical demands of F2 and F3, suggesting that modifications might be necessary to foster greater female participation and progression. She noted that F2, in particular, can be more physically taxing in certain aspects compared to F1, even if the neck demands are less. This implies that while F1 might be attainable, the journey through junior categories presents disproportionate physical challenges.
Braking Power: Not an Obstacle for Female Drivers
Addressing another common concern, Hawkins explicitly stated that she encountered no difficulties with the intense braking forces required in an F1 car. Surprisingly, she found the brake pressure in the GT cars she currently races to be a more significant challenge than that in the Formula 1 machinery, further dispelling misconceptions about women's capability in high-performance racing.
