Jeep Wagoneer and Ram 1500 Extended-Range EVs Face Further Delays

The highly anticipated extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) from Stellantis, specifically the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and the Ram 1500, are facing further production postponements. These repeated delays could significantly impact their market entry and competitive positioning in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle landscape. The company's strategy to introduce these EREVs, which combine an electric powertrain with a gasoline engine for extended range, is now under scrutiny as other manufacturers advance their own versions of this technology.

Initially, Jeep had announced that the 2026 Grand Wagoneer would lead the charge as the first extended-range EV in the US, with its launch planned for the following year. Concurrently, Ram had been teasing an electric truck for an extended period. However, the fully electric Ram 1500 REV experienced multiple setbacks, eventually leading Stellantis to declare its initial version effectively canceled. Despite this, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa hinted at a more comprehensive product line, including the first extended-range EV from Ram, previously known as the Ramcharger.

The revised Ram 1500 REV was initially slated for a late 2026 release. Yet, recent reports indicate another delay, pushing its projected arrival to April 2027. Similarly, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer EREV, which was expected to begin production earlier this year, has also been impacted, with its manufacturing now scheduled for November 2027, representing a six-month delay. These postponements highlight ongoing challenges in bringing these innovative vehicles to market.

Unlike conventional battery electric vehicles, EREVs integrate a gasoline engine that functions as a generator, recharging the battery and extending the vehicle's range when needed. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer EREV, for instance, is equipped with a 92 kWh battery pack and a 3.6-liter V6 engine, which powers a 130 kW generator. Stellantis projects that this configuration will offer a combined range of 500 miles on a full charge and a full tank of fuel. Furthermore, Jeep claims the Grand Wagoneer EREV will set a new standard for flagship performance, boasting an estimated 647 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just five seconds.

While Jeep and Ram's EREVs encounter additional delays, numerous other automakers are making considerable progress in this powertrain segment. Companies such as Hyundai, Genesis, Ford, and Volkswagen's Scout brand are all planning to roll out their extended-range EVs within the next few years. For example, Hyundai is set to introduce the Santa Fe EREV, its inaugural extended-range EV, in the first half of 2027, with production slated for its Alabama plant and sales targeting the US market. These delays mean Stellantis risks falling behind its competitors in the crucial US market, potentially ceding an early advantage to other brands that successfully launch their EREVs sooner.

The continued delays for the Jeep Wagoneer and Ram 1500 extended-range electric vehicles underscore the complexities of bringing new automotive technologies to market. These setbacks could impact Stellantis's competitive standing as other manufacturers accelerate their EREV development and deployment. BYD Unveils 'Great Seagull': A Larger, Enhanced Electric Hatchback

BYD is gearing up to introduce a new electric hatchback, named the 'Great Seagull,' which is poised to fill a niche between its existing Dolphin and Seagull models in both size and cost. This upcoming vehicle was officially unveiled at the Chengdu Auto Show, with a market release anticipated by the close of 2026. Positioned as a larger and more capable option, the Great Seagull aims to build on the success of its smaller sibling, which has already established itself as a global best-seller in the EV market.

Key enhancements for the Great Seagull include significant increases in its physical dimensions and powertrain capabilities. Measuring 4,205 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, with a 2,650 mm wheelbase, it offers a more spacious platform compared to the current Seagull's 3,780 mm length. Under the hood, it will feature a more robust 95 kW (127 hp) electric motor, a substantial upgrade from the current model's 55 kW (75 hp). Additionally, the Great Seagull is expected to incorporate BYD's cutting-edge Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging technology, along with a roof-mounted LiDAR system for advanced safety and convenience features, signaling a comprehensive technological leap.

The exterior of the Great Seagull showcases a refreshed design, including sleeker LED headlights, a distinct closed-off grille, and sharp body lines that differentiate it from the standard version. Inside, the cabin boasts BYD's latest design philosophy, featuring a larger central infotainment screen, a reconfigured center console for improved ergonomics, and a contemporary two-spoke steering wheel. While official pricing and battery specifications are yet to be announced, it is expected to be priced slightly higher than the current Seagull, which starts around $10,000. Following its debut in China, BYD plans to introduce this larger electric hatchback to international markets, potentially as a premium variant of the Dolphin Surf or Dolphin Mini, where it will compete with other leading EVs in its class.
