IndyCar Unveils Revolutionary IR-28 Race Car





IndyCar has unveiled its state-of-the-art race vehicle, the IR-28, which is slated to make its competitive debut at the commencement of the 2028 season. This groundbreaking design, meticulously crafted in collaboration with Dallara, is poised to usher in a new era for open-wheel racing, promising unparalleled speed, heightened safety protocols, and intensified wheel-to-wheel competition across all racing disciplines.
The IR-28 represents a significant leap forward in racing technology, focusing on several key areas. It boasts a substantial weight reduction of approximately 100 pounds compared to its predecessor, which dramatically enhances its power-to-weight ratio for improved acceleration and braking. The car's aerodynamics have been completely re-engineered, featuring a purpose-built wake architecture designed to minimize dirty air and facilitate easier overtaking. This includes advanced front and rear wing configurations tailored for both road circuits and superspeedways. Furthermore, the integrated aeroscreen, now seamlessly built into the chassis, contributes to a lighter, sleeker profile, giving the car a distinctive "fighter jet" aesthetic. Inside the cockpit, mechanical anti-roll bar controls have been replaced with electronically adjustable systems, freeing up space and increasing responsiveness for drivers. The innovative AXIS inertance suspension system, a shared damping architecture, offers multi-mode tuning options, making IndyCar the sole major motorsport championship to permit both front and rear third-element inertance systems.
Under the hood, the IR-28 will be powered by a 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 internal combustion engine, capable of generating up to 760 horsepower, with strong commitments from both Chevrolet and Honda. This hybrid powertrain incorporates a low-voltage hybrid unit from Helix, integrated within the bellhousing, and a cutting-edge battery-based Energy Storage System from BOLD Technology, providing 14 times the energy capacity of previous models for strategic power deployment. A newly engineered Xtrac transmission further reduces the car's weight by 25 pounds, optimizing overall performance. Beyond performance and design, safety remains paramount. The IR-28's wider cockpit accommodates a broader range of driver physiques, with improved internal airflow and cooling.
