IndyCar Champion Alex Palou to Participate in Indy NXT Development Test

Five-time IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou will be stepping into an Indy NXT car for the Chris Griffis Memorial Test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. This participation is geared towards supporting Chip Ganassi Racing's efforts in evaluating and enhancing their developmental series vehicle. Palou's involvement is anticipated to provide invaluable insights, drawing from his extensive experience in elite-level racing, despite the noticeable differences between an IndyCar and an Indy NXT machine.
The highly decorated driver expressed that transitioning from his advanced IndyCar to the less powerful Indy NXT machinery would present a considerable challenge. He noted the disparity in aspects such as downforce, braking systems, and overall performance. However, Palou's familiarity with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course is expected to give him a head start in adapting to the junior series car.
Palou emphasized his enthusiasm for contributing to the team's understanding of the car's characteristics and capabilities. He likened the Indy NXT car's specifications to those of an F3 car, which he last drove approximately eight to ten years ago. While acknowledging that he might not immediately operate at peak performance, he underscored that the primary objective of the test is learning and development, rather than competitive racing.
Despite his vast experience in top-tier racing, Palou admitted that certain driving habits ingrained from his IndyCar career might require conscious adjustments. The braking techniques and the way he "feels" the car are distinctly different in an Indy NXT vehicle, demanding a period of recalibration.
The Chris Griffis Memorial Test at IMS will feature a busy schedule for Chip Ganassi Racing, with several other drivers joining Palou. Alessandro de Tullio, an NXT race winner and seven-time pole sitter, will be among those testing. Alexander Korieba and Frankie Mossman are also slated to participate. Carson Etter is expected to return to the #11 car after recovering from shoulder surgery.
For racing enthusiasts, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has announced that viewing mounds will be accessible to the public, allowing fans to witness the testing action firsthand.
This test offers a rare opportunity for a seasoned champion like Palou to engage with a developmental series, providing crucial feedback that can shape the future performance of aspiring racers' machinery. His participation highlights the commitment to continuous improvement within Chip Ganassi Racing, leveraging top-tier talent to nurture future prospects.
