John Hennessey, the visionary behind HMS, rarely encounters clients who are dissatisfied with his team's output. The company's expertise lies in transforming the already potent 400-plus-horsepower V-10 engines of Dodge Vipers into even more formidable machines, often exceeding 550 horsepower. This dedication to power has earned Hennessey significant recognition, including the privilege of purchasing one of the inaugural Viper GTS coupes, a vehicle personally autographed by Chrysler executives like Bob Lutz and Tom Gale. As expected, Hennessey’s new acquisition did not remain in its factory state for long, quickly becoming a canvas for his performance modifications.

Hennessey wasted no time in converting his $71,964 GTS into the extraordinary $108,764 “Venom 550.” A significant portion of this investment, $22,000, was allocated to the Venom 550 package itself, a power-focused upgrade that demands six weeks for installation at Hennessey’s Houston facility. The engine modifications are comprehensive and intricate, reflecting the substantial cost. They include meticulously ported and polished cylinder heads, a thoroughly revised valvetrain with stainless-steel valves, roller rocker arms, heavy-duty springs, hardened pushrods, and a camshaft designed for increased lift and slightly reduced duration. An improved K&N air filter supplies larger-bore throttle bodies, which are seamlessly integrated into the V-10's intake manifold after being Extrude Honed, ported, and polished. The V-10 breathes out through a stainless-steel exhaust system, featuring custom headers and three-inch mandrel-bent piping culminating in twin Dynamax mufflers. These extensive modifications collectively deliver an impressive 550 horsepower at 5700 rpm and 577 pound-feet of torque at 4500 rpm, a performance level that Hennessey guarantees and can verify on his Dynojet dynamometer for every buyer.

The Venom 550 redefines expectations for street-legal vehicle speed. Despite the initial wheelspin, which is a testament to its immense power, the car rockets from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3.8 seconds. It conquers the quarter-mile in 11.7 seconds at 126 mph, reaching 150 mph in 17.9 seconds and 170 mph in 25.4 seconds. These figures place it remarkably close to the 603-horsepower Lingenfelter Corvette and decisively ahead of a Ferrari F50. During testing at the Transportation Research Center in Ohio, the Venom 550 achieved a scorching top speed of 197 mph, a significant 20 mph increase over the factory GTS. Additional HMS enhancements on the test vehicle included a $3200 set of HMS/Speedline wheels and a $4500 front-brake upgrade featuring Alcon calipers and 13.5-inch rotors, which demonstrated superior fade resistance compared to the stock brakes. While the $5500 Connolly-leather interior adds a touch of luxury, the $800 “short springs” were noted to compromise ride comfort, despite improving handling. However, the $800 HMS/RT shifter was praised for its ability to tighten gear throws without sacrificing shifting speed, requiring only a marginal increase in effort. The Venom 550 is undeniably loud, producing a resonant boom at lower RPMs and a glorious, ear-splitting wail at full throttle that commands attention within a wide radius. Although a quieter factory exhaust option is available, it comes at the cost of 30 horsepower, reducing the total to 520 hp. This car is anything but subtle, designed for those who embrace an overt display of power.
