GMC Hummer EV Airbag Recall: Safety Concerns Emerge for 2026 Models
GMC has announced a significant recall affecting 354 units of its 2026 Hummer EV Pickup and SUV models. The recall addresses a critical safety concern related to the front passenger airbag system, where a wiring defect may prevent proper deployment during a collision. This flaw, discovered during manufacturing, stems from inconsistent crimping in the instrument-panel harness due to a temporary shift from automated to manual processes at a supplier facility. The affected vehicles, produced between July 31 and October 24, 2025, face an increased risk of injury in frontal crashes. GMC plans to notify owners by December 22, 2025, providing a no-cost repair involving the installation of a new jumper harness.
The root cause of this recall has been identified as a manufacturing anomaly that occurred during a three-day period in July 2025. During this time, the automated crimping machinery at Yazaki North America, a key supplier, was offline for maintenance. As a result, manual crimping procedures were implemented, which subsequently led to inconsistent terminal connections in the wire harnesses. This inconsistency can disrupt the signal transmission to the front passenger airbag, rendering it inoperative when needed most. While some vehicles with the defect were corrected before leaving the production line, a total of 245 SUVs and 109 pickups from the 2026 model year are still at risk.
GMC's internal investigation into the matter began on August 21, 2025, after a loose wire was detected during the assembly of a Hummer EV SUV. Although no field incidents or injuries have been reported to date, the company decided to issue a safety recall based on confirmed findings of compromised harness integrity. Owners might observe an airbag warning light on their dashboard, although this indicator may not be present in all affected vehicles. This proactive measure by GMC underscores their commitment to vehicle safety, despite the issue originating from a supplier's manufacturing process.
