From Retail to Flight: A Midlife Career Transformation

Craig Celek, at 55, embarked on a new professional chapter, transitioning into the role of a flight attendant. Having spent 15 years in publishing in Hong Kong, followed by leadership positions at New Balance and Saks Off 5th, he sought a fresh direction. Inspired by friends who had also embraced aviation later in life, he applied to major US airlines, including American, United, and Delta, ultimately choosing Delta for its comprehensive interview process and welcoming approach to older candidates. He observed that many in his interview group were over 45, with one candidate being 62, reinforcing the airline's openness to experienced individuals. He attributes his success in securing the position to his extensive background in retail, believing that his generation, Gen X, possesses a strong work ethic valued by employers.
Celek emphasizes that maturity, patience, and wisdom are significant assets in his current profession. His prior experience in retail, particularly in resolving customer issues and ensuring satisfaction, has directly translated into his ability to manage challenging situations, such as an 11-hour flight delay where he and his team successfully kept 250 passengers content. He finds joy in serving passengers across all classes, appreciating the opportunity to engage with them and provide higher levels of service in premium cabins. This career shift has also brought the added benefit of extensive travel, allowing him to discover new places both domestically and internationally. He particularly enjoys exploring destinations like Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Colorado Springs, and Bozeman, Montana, immersing himself in local culture, food, and art. International layovers in cities such as Lisbon, Rome, London, and Athens have further enriched his experience. The flexible schedule also enables him to travel with his 92-year-old father, who flies free of charge, creating cherished memories together, such as enjoying an ice cream sundae in first class on a trip to Paris.
This midlife career change has not only brought personal fulfillment but also financial rewards, with a competitive earnings package that includes base salary, boarding pay, and reroute pay, potentially reaching up to $80,000 in the first year. Having completed 209 flights, including 29 long-haul journeys, since April, Celek describes his new career as an exciting adventure. His story is a testament to the idea that age can be a profound advantage, bringing invaluable life and professional experience to any role. It underscores the potential for individuals to redefine their professional paths later in life, embracing change and finding new passions with renewed enthusiasm.
