From Corporate Ladder to Independent Success: A Consultant's Journey

Forge Your Own Path: The Rewards of Independent Consulting
Embracing Autonomy: A Shift from Traditional Corporate Structures
Having commenced my professional journey at Accenture, I navigated the conventional corporate training ground, gaining invaluable experience within a large consulting firm. While such an environment provides a solid foundation, it inherently carries a distinct organizational culture and operational methodology. Recognizing my innate entrepreneurial drive, I pondered my career trajectory over the next decade: would I pursue the established corporate hierarchy or embrace risk to cultivate my own diverse client portfolio?
The Evolution of an Independent Consultant: A Decade of Growth and Adaptation
Since 2014, I have operated as an independent consultant, a role I’ve wholeheartedly embraced. My career has largely been characterized by a series of client engagements, with fortunate sustained relationships spanning several years, allowing for seamless transitions between projects without significant downtime. Firms like Barton have been instrumental in this journey, providing new avenues and opportunities.
Pioneering a Collaborative Consulting Model: Beyond Individual Practice
My independent journey has evolved beyond sole proprietorship. We are actively developing a novel consulting framework centered on collaboration. This involves forming dynamic teams of consultants, enabling us to undertake projects and programs for clients on a much grander scale. This network-based approach provides a compelling alternative to traditional, often high-cost, consulting giants. Clients seek our services for subsequent project phases, following the groundwork laid by larger firms, effectively allowing us to thrive in their wake.
Transforming Client Engagement: From Execution to Strategic Partnership
Initially, client engagements were straightforward, often focused on specific deliverables, such as project management. However, our new collaborative model has redefined this dynamic. By integrating additional expertise, we can now offer not only execution but also forward-looking strategic recommendations, profoundly changing the client conversation.
The Allure of Independence: Flexibility, Autonomy, and Meritocracy
The primary draw of this independent model is unparalleled flexibility. As one's own employer, the freedom to manage time and work from any global location is immense, particularly with remote and international clients. Despite lower daily rates compared to large firms, independent consultants often achieve greater net earnings. A key challenge, however, is safeguarding and leveraging accumulated knowledge across diverse client engagements, particularly when intellectual property belongs to the client. The larger question then becomes how to unite a collective of independent consultants around a unified service or solution. I value meritocracy deeply, preferring to be judged solely on the quality and impact of my work. The traditional corporate environment, often a politically charged arena, requires enduring significant challenges to reach the top. This realization prompted me to question if such a path aligned with my aspirations. My consistent advice to fellow independent consultants, regardless of their experience level, is to continuously invest in themselves, striving for indispensability in their field.
