From Aeronautical Dreams to Rural Revival: One Entrepreneur's Journey in Japan

This narrative recounts the journey of Daisuke Fujii, co-founder of Farm & Firm Company, a Japanese consulting business dedicated to empowering farmers and rural areas through agritourism, hospitality, and business growth. Raised in Saitama, just north of Tokyo, Fujii developed an early passion for aerospace and engineering. His ambition to design aircraft led him to pursue a tuition-free education at the National Defense Academy of Japan, followed by graduate studies in aerospace engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.
During his time in the United States, Fujii observed the transformative power of venture capital in fostering urban development, a stark contrast to the population decline he witnessed in rural Japan. This experience profoundly influenced his perspective. After a brief career as an aircraft engineer and a subsequent transition to the automotive sector due to funding constraints, he earned a highly regarded Small and Medium Enterprise Management Consultant certification in Japan. Equipped with new expertise and a burgeoning entrepreneurial spirit, Fujii departed from the traditional corporate environment, driven by a vision to establish innovative business ecosystems outside Japan's major metropolitan centers.
In 2009, Fujii established Farm & Firm, initially consulting for farmers to help them build their brands and engage directly with consumers. His venture quickly expanded to include food manufacturing and a farm-to-table restaurant. By 2011, his company's success led to a pivotal opportunity when Otawara City commissioned Farm & Firm to develop an agritourism project. Despite his lack of prior experience in tourism, Fujii championed the concept of farm stays, overcoming initial skepticism from local farmers who doubted the appeal of their homes and region to visitors. To further demonstrate the potential of rural Japan, he founded Ohtawara Tourism, focusing on showcasing the authentic beauty of daily life in these communities.
A significant milestone in Fujii's efforts was the revitalization of an abandoned traditional home, an akiya, in Nakagawa, near Otawara City. He transformed this vacant property into a boutique hotel called Iizukatei. His dual objectives for this project were to attract independent travelers to the rural town and to inspire locals to recognize the inherent value and appeal of their heritage. The success of Iizukatei dramatically increased international tourism to the area, drawing hundreds of visitors annually, and encouraging more farmers to convert their properties into farm hotels. This initiative provided a crucial new revenue stream for farmers, helping to sustain their livelihoods and preserve Japan's rich rural culture.
Fujii's decision to pivot from a long-cherished dream of aircraft design to rural development was driven by a belief in making a more substantial societal contribution through entrepreneurship. His engineering background instilled in him the ability to manage complex projects, challenge conventional thinking, and innovate through experimentation, skills that proved invaluable in his new endeavor. This entrepreneurial path has afforded him unique opportunities and experiences, aligning his work with his personal values and providing a profound sense of purpose.
