Former Five Below Lawyer Transitions to AI Training

Bridging Legal Expertise with the Future of AI
From Corporate Law to Independent Practice: A New Chapter
After a distinguished career spanning over two and a half decades in law, including a pivotal role as the Executive Vice President and General Counsel at Five Below, a prominent national retailer, Ron Masciantonio embarked on a new professional path. At the close of last year, following seven years with the company, he decided to pursue different challenges. This decision led him to establish his independent legal firm, Masciantonio Law, where he now offers specialized legal services to entertainers and small businesses. Concurrently, he also manages recording artists within the pop and R&B music genres.
Embracing AI Training: A Dual Professional Pursuit
Masciantonio's foray into artificial intelligence training began when recruiters, seeking individuals with extensive legal backgrounds, approached him. As his new practice gained momentum a few months ago, he identified AI training as an excellent avenue to expand his revenue streams and engage in intellectually stimulating work. He subsequently joined Micro1, a company specializing in AI development, perceiving this endeavor as a valuable enhancement to his legal practice. He describes the work as academic, scientific, and creative, a refreshing change from the fast-paced, reactive environment of corporate governance focused on stock prices and daily sales figures. Instead, this role emphasizes the development of enduring and continuously improving AI systems.
Guiding AI in Legal Decision-Making Processes
Masciantonio dedicates between 20 to 30 hours each week to AI training, though this commitment fluctuates based on the demands of his legal practice, occasionally extending up to 40 hours or reducing to 10-20 hours. A significant benefit of this work is its asynchronous nature, allowing him to seamlessly integrate AI training with his client work, filling any potential gaps in his schedule. He likens his role in AI training to that of a mentor, with the AI serving as his mentee.
Developing AI's Understanding of Legal Nuances
His initial tasks involved crafting realistic legal scenarios, such as creating a contract between two research organizations, drawing upon his past experiences. He intentionally embedded unique challenges within these contracts and provided detailed context documents outlining each party's objectives. Following this, he would meticulously mark up the contracts, mimicking real-world legal negotiations. He also developed a comprehensive rubric to help the AI interpret the significance of various "red lines" or edits. The ultimate objective is to equip the AI with a foundational benchmark, enabling it to independently execute such tasks with a nuanced understanding of legal principles. While AI can already identify contract discrepancies, its current limitation lies in comprehending the underlying core issues and avoiding overly aggressive negotiations, which is where Masciantonio's seasoned judgment proves invaluable.
Compensation Model and Efficiency Incentives
The compensation for this AI training work includes an hourly rate, supplemented by task-based incentives. For instance, at Micro1, while his standard hourly rate might be $200, specific tasks like creating a contract packet could come with a triple multiplier. This structure rewards efficiency and accuracy, motivating trainers to refine their processes and deliver high-quality output more rapidly.
AI Training as a Catalyst for Legal Professional Growth
Masciantonio believes that returning to the fundamental aspects of contract review and agreement editing has provided him with a renewed perspective, particularly after years of overseeing large legal teams. This hands-on experience compels him to critically analyze the rationale behind every legal action. He acknowledges the profound transformation within the legal profession, anticipating that AI will increasingly handle routine tasks, thereby impacting younger lawyers and paralegals. He advocates for focusing the training of emerging legal professionals on higher-level expertise and critical review, rather than on repetitive duties. While this shift may initially reduce certain job opportunities, he foresees the creation of more impactful roles in the long term.
Ethical Imperatives in the Age of AI
Despite some skepticism from peers who jokingly suggest he's "training his replacement," Masciantonio maintains a different perspective. He argues that generative AI is already providing legal advice, and as lawyers, there is an ethical obligation to ensure the accuracy and reliability of this advice. He views his involvement as an opportunity to contribute positively to the world of AI, ensuring that its legal applications are sound and beneficial. For him, this commitment aligns with his professional duties as a lawyer, regardless of how unconventional it might seem to others.
