Former F1 Driver: George Russell Facing Mounting Pressure at Mercedes After Dutch GP
Former Formula 1 driver and television analyst Jolyon Palmer recently expressed his belief that George Russell is experiencing heightened pressure within the Mercedes team. Palmer asserted that Russell's performance, particularly after the Dutch Grand Prix, indicates he is "still not at the required level" when evaluated against his teammate, Kimi Antonelli.
The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort saw Mercedes achieve a commendable double podium, with their drivers securing second and third positions, trailing only McLaren's Lando Norris. However, a significant point of discussion post-race involved a late team directive that instructed Russell to cede his track position to Antonelli. This strategic maneuver, though initially met with Russell's radioed reservations about potentially jeopardizing a double podium, was later acknowledged by him as the correct decision.
Palmer elaborated on his perspective during an F1 TV broadcast, noting that while he understood Mercedes' rationale, Russell would likely feel some frustration. Despite securing a third-place finish, which places Russell second in the drivers' standings—on par with Lewis Hamilton at 183 points each—Palmer emphasized that Antonelli's continued stellar performance puts additional strain on Russell. Antonelli currently leads the championship with 242 points, holding a significant 59-point advantage. Palmer implied that Russell, upon reflection, would recognize the need for further improvement, particularly in areas like race starts, to match Antonelli's consistent excellence.
